About Gokhan

I'm Dr Gokhan Guler, a Principal Data & AI Architect. Databases are my day job: I design the data platforms that large organisations run their reporting and AI on — ingestion pipelines from ERP and CRM systems, cloud warehouses and lakehouses on Google Cloud, Azure and AWS, master data management, and the vector stores behind AI assistants — and I govern the data-architecture decisions that go with them. I hold a PhD in engineering and computer science and am certified across AWS, GCP and Azure.

I've taught for more than twenty years at undergraduate and postgraduate level and delivered over 2,000 hours of one-to-one tutoring since 2017. My students have come from Oxford, Imperial College London, UCL, Manchester, Bristol, Queen Mary, Westminster and Maastricht, among others.

I teach databases the way I design them: start from the question the data has to answer, design the model, then write the SQL — because most database problems are design problems wearing a query's clothes. Plain language, live SQL on screen, and real examples from production systems.

Away from work you'll find me with my family, who are my biggest supporters in all of this.

I teach Databases and SQL to students on database, information-systems and data modules (BTEC to MSc), and to professionals moving into data roles — from your first SELECT to designing the warehouse an organisation reports from.

WHAT WE WORK ON

- Relational fundamentals — entities and relationships, ER diagrams, keys, normalisation to 3NF and BCNF (and when to denormalise), integrity constraints, transactions and ACID, and why the design matters more than the code.

- SQL properly — SELECT through joins, subqueries, grouping and window functions, DDL and DML, views, stored procedures and triggers, indexing and query plans — on MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server and Oracle, with SQLite for quick practice.

- Coursework tools — Microsoft Access (tables, relationships, queries, forms and reports for assignments), MySQL Workbench, phpMyAdmin, DBeaver, and connecting a database to Python or a web front end.

- Beyond relational — NoSQL (MongoDB, key-value and column stores), graph databases, and vector databases for AI applications, the retrieval layer behind RAG: what each is for and when not to use it.

- Data warehousing and analytics — star and snowflake schemas, dimensional modelling, ETL and ELT pipelines, BigQuery, Snowflake, Azure Synapse and Redshift, lakehouses, and connecting it all to Power BI.

- Administration and security — backups and recovery, users and permissions, performance tuning, GDPR and data classification, master data management.

- Certification syllabi — Microsoft DP-900 and DP-300, Oracle Database SQL Certified Associate, Google Professional Data Engineer and AWS Data Engineer Associate, with practice questions.

- Coursework, dissertations and projects — from a normalised ERD and a working schema to a data-warehouse design report. You build it; I supervise and challenge it.

RECENT WORK
Database and analytics modules on undergraduate and postgraduate computing and business programmes · SQL and Access coursework from ERD to working queries · enterprise data platforms in my architecture work: ingestion pipelines from ERP systems into cloud warehouses, master data management, and the databases behind AI applications.

HOW SESSIONS RUN
Online, with screen-sharing and live SQL on your own setup or a shared sandbox. You keep the scripts, diagrams and notes after every session. The first (free) session is a diagnostic: we map your module, assignment or target role against your deadlines and agree a plan. I reply within a few hours.

I help you understand and build your own work — the schema, the queries and the write-up are yours; I supervise, explain and challenge.
