• Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

  I speak Danish fluently because I was born and raised in Denmark. Danish is my native language and has always been part of my everyday life, education and cultural identity. Growing up in Denmark has given me a natural understanding of pronunciation, rhythm, informal expressions and the difference between textbook Danish and the language people actually use. As a tutor, I turn this instinctive knowledge into clear, practical explanations that help my students communicate confidently.

• Can you name a living, historical or fictional character who represents the language’s culture?

  Hans Christian Andersen is an emblematic representative of Danish language and culture. His stories are known throughout the world, but they also contain qualities often associated with Danish culture: imagination, simplicity, humour and thoughtful observations about people and society. His work shows how a language spoken by a relatively small population can have an enormous international influence. He is also an excellent reminder that learning Danish provides access to literature and cultural ideas that cannot always be fully captured in translation.

• Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

  One expression I particularly like is “tak for sidst,” which literally means “thank you for the last time.” Danes often say it the next time they meet someone after a dinner, celebration or other enjoyable occasion. It is a simple expression, but it reflects appreciation and acknowledges the time people have shared. I enjoy teaching phrases like this because they help students understand not only the language but also the social customs and values behind it.

• Why does speaking this language matter to you?

  Speaking Danish matters to me because language creates connection and a sense of belonging. For someone living, studying or working in Denmark, learning Danish can make everyday situations easier and help them participate more fully in the community. It opens the door to conversations, friendships, humour, cultural traditions and professional opportunities. I find it very rewarding to help students move from feeling uncertain or excluded to feeling confident enough to express themselves and take part in Danish life.

• What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the learning process?

  Pronunciation is often the greatest challenge. Danish contains many vowel sounds, the soft “d,” the glottal stop known as stød, and spoken words that can sound quite different from how they are written. Students may understand a written sentence but struggle to recognise it when spoken naturally.
  
  The most effective approach is regular listening, repetition and guided speaking practice. I break difficult words into manageable sounds, explain mouth positioning and gradually increase the speaking speed. I also use realistic sentences and everyday conversations so students learn Danish they can use immediately.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your school days.

  One valuable lesson from my school days was recognising how different formal written Danish can be from everyday spoken Danish. At school, we focused on correct grammar, spelling and structured writing, while conversations outside the classroom were faster and included shortened sounds and informal expressions.
  
  That contrast has strongly influenced my teaching. I want my students to understand correct Danish while also preparing them for how the language sounds in real life. Seeing a student suddenly understand Danish at a natural speaking speed is always a rewarding moment because it shows that the language is becoming practical and accessible.

• How has travel or a specific trip helped you increase your knowledge of the language?

  Because I was born and raised in Denmark, my knowledge of Danish comes primarily from living with the language rather than learning it through travel. However, meeting and teaching people from different countries has helped me view Danish from an international learner’s perspective.
  
  Students often ask questions that native speakers rarely consider, such as why the word order changes or why a word is pronounced differently from how it is written. These questions encourage me to examine my language more carefully and have made me a more precise, patient and understanding tutor.

• What makes you a Superprof in language?

  What makes me a Superprof is my combination of native-language knowledge, patience and practical teaching. I understand Danish as it is spoken in everyday life, but I can also explain its grammar, pronunciation and cultural context clearly.
  
  I adapt each lesson to the student’s goals, whether they are learning Danish for work, education, family life, relocation or personal interest. My lessons provide a supportive environment where students can make mistakes, ask questions and build confidence at their own pace. My aim is not simply to teach vocabulary and grammar, but to help every student use Danish naturally and independently.
