About Alaina
Hello! My name is Alaina, and I’m passionate about helping students discover confidence and joy in learning English, Creative Writing, and History. My teaching style is supportive, patient, and flexible — I meet students where they are and help them grow step by step. Whether we’re exploring a novel, brainstorming ideas for a story, editing an essay, or unpacking a historical event, I always aim to make the material clear, engaging, and relevant. What I love most about teaching is seeing students develop their voice: learning how to express themselves in writing, ask great questions, and think critically about the world around them. My goal is not just to help with assignments, but to give students lasting skills they can carry forward into their academic work and beyond. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy reading, writing, and spending time with my partner. I look forward to helping you achieve your goals and making learning an enjoyable, rewarding experience!

I take a holistic and student-centered approach, combining clarity, creativity, and critical thinking. In English and Creative Writing, I focus on strengthening language skills, fostering imagination, and refining self-expression. For History, I encourage analytical thinking, contextual understanding, and connecting the past to present-day issues. My lessons blend discussion, close reading, guided writing, and interactive activities to make learning engaging and meaningful. I also emphasize reading comprehension, editing, and proofreading skills, helping students not only produce stronger work but also understand the process of revision and improvement.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Discussion of Support Needs (5 minutes)
Begin by checking in with the student: identify areas they feel unsure about, upcoming assignments, or specific challenges (reading comprehension, writing, historical analysis, etc.).
Locate Issues (5–10 minutes)
Diagnose difficulties by reviewing a recent assignment, paper draft, or reading passage.
Highlight patterns (e.g., grammar issues, unclear thesis statements, weak argument structure, or gaps in historical context).
Course Material Review (10–15 minutes)
Revisit the relevant text, paper, or material together, breaking down key themes, arguments, or language use.
Core Content (10–15 minutes)
Teach or reinforce the specific skill or concept needed (e.g., structuring an essay, analyzing sources, improving flow in creative writing, or strengthening comprehension strategies).
Guided Practice (10–15 minutes)
Work through examples together: revising a section of a paper, annotating a passage, or brainstorming a historical essay outline.
Independent Practice (10 minutes)
Student applies the skill independently while I observe, offering support only as needed.
Feedback & Reflection (5–10 minutes)
Provide constructive feedback on the independent work.
Reinforce what went well and identify strategies for improvement.
Goals for Next Session (5 minutes)
Set clear, achievable goals (e.g., complete a paper draft, improve thesis clarity, practice proofreading, or read assigned material with annotations).
Ensure the student leaves with direction and confidence.
