In my lessons i seek to develop the students understanding and intuition surrounding a topic or method. My lessons are for those students who wish to UNDERSTAND and not REMEMBER. I generally prefer the student to be engaged in or even driving their own learning (e.g. asking high level questions that shift the discussion) but take no issue in taking the lead and 'digging out' engagement.
