About Sofia
My mother imparted my love of teaching English to me as the only South Texas National Board Certified secondary English teacher. She is the most phenomenal instructor I've ever witnessed, and I'd like to think she's passed her skills and passion on to me. I've taught high school English for 2 years directly out of college, and I've continued teaching and one-on-one tutoring as I've worked to continue my studies in a master's program for creative writing. My eye is trained for grammar, my ear for rhythm and smooth writing, and my heart is tuned to every student I work with to make sure you feel supported, seen, and made confident in your abilities as a writer. Anyone can write, but it takes a good teacher to write well. I'd love to help you get there!

I teach writing holistically. Close-reading and critical thinking are the fertile ground that produces good writing, so we'll start with developing an eye and ear for the mechanics of good writing in what we read. Strategically shifting from reading to analytical writing will allow us to develop your unique writerly voice while maintaining and upholding the standards of high quality academic or creative writing, depending on your circumstances. Close attention is paid to audience and genre to ensure the delivery of suitable writing on a student by student basis.
