About Josh
I’m a published poet and professional writer with over twelve years’ experience. I first earned my chops writing original plays for various theatre groups, at home and abroad, including Italy’s national theatre company: Teatro Stabile. Since then, I’ve written on a freelance basis for a number of projects, including ghost-writing for a novel and an ongoing comic book series.
I’ve been teaching writing for over three years, whether for self-expression, exam preparation, improving one’s ability in a specific context (business, creative or academic), or as a necessary supplement to language-learning. I’ve taught a diverse range of learners – including primary and secondary school students, those preparing for university, as well as aspiring writers looking to exercise their storytelling muscles.
All writing is fundamentally creative, and the better we are at writing creatively, the more we’re able to accomplish with our writing. This understanding is at the core of my approach. As a teacher, I'll guide you in how best to develop, structure and clarify your ideas in a style that feels true to you.
There is no clear-cut path to genuine expression – and while there are plenty of techniques on craft we’ll learn along the way – my ultimate goal is to help you nurture and claim your authentic voice.

I pride myself on my ability to draw out the potential in all of my students, to set them ambitious but realistic goals, and to meet them always with sensitivity, encouragement and no small dose of humour.
I'm not a believer of a one-size fits all approach. I tailoring all of my lessons to suit the personalities, needs, learning styles and objectives of each of my students. Therefore, my first couple of lessons with you will be focused on plugging into what 'clicks' for you as an individual and determining both your long and short-term goals.
There are many directions our ongoing lessons can take, depending on your requirements:
I can help with comprehension and critical reading skills, as well as mining a text for an in-depth understanding of its themes, its author’s intentions and the literary devices employed. I also encourage all of my students to think outside of the box and not be afraid of trusting their own interpretations and instincts.
I can also act as a proofreader, editor and creative collaborator to run a fine toothcomb over any project you're working on, helping you bring out the gold from the muck, as it were.
My main focus is on enhancing your capability and confidence in writing and self-expression. Generally speaking, I use the classroom to look over written work you've already produced; this time is far better suited for review, discussion and practising technique, in my experience.
Though lessons will feature short-form writing exercises, the larger task of writing is done outside of our time together. I will set you regular writing assignments, based on what we're learning, where we're heading, and your progress along the way.
I find it's more effective and fruitful for students to work on their writing in private, because:
A - There's less pressure ' to perform' or 'be perfect.'
B - The majority of our best writing comes from a place of uninterupted solitude. It's necessary to go away by ourselves and devote ourselves to our writing practice in the privacy of our own heart.
C - Practically speaking, it means there is more time in our lessons together for discussion of the ongoing work, close reading and further elaboration.
In addition, the process will involve studying other writers and reading plenty too. It will also necessitate finding your own sources of inspiration, and, most importantly, spending time putting pen to paper to help you realise your voice and plot out your unique style. I believe we learn best by doing, and that the creative muse visits those who turn up for her as part of an everyday practise.
With gratitude,
Josh

We’ve been working with Josh for about a year, and he’s had such a great impact on our child, Matty. His main focus was encouraging Matty to write stories and be creative, and it’s been amazing to watch that grow over time. Josh has a really natural, calm way of getting kids to open up and express their ideas without pressure.
He always made sure the sessions felt fun and relaxed, while still challenging Matty to think deeper and try new things. Whether they were working on characters, dialogue, or just brainstorming wild ideas, Josh was fully engaged and supportive. We saw Matty’s confidence in writing improve a lot, and even outside of lessons, he started writing more on his own.
Josh is the kind of tutor who really listens and adapts, and he clearly cares about his students. It’s been a pleasure having him around each week, and we’ve all looked forward to the sessions. We’d definitely recommend him to anyone looking to nurture creativity and writing skills in their child.I worked with Josh as my creative writing tutor for a full year and found him to be an exceptional mentor. His greatest strength is his ability to listen carefully and ask thoughtful questions that help clarify your creative vision. Rather than imposing his own ideas, Josh guided me to discover what I truly wanted to express in my work.
What impressed me most was his skill in challenging me to push beyond my comfort zone while remaining supportive and encouraging. He has an intuitive sense of when to offer guidance and when to encourage experimentation. Under his mentorship, I explored creative territories I never would have discovered on my own.
Josh creates a safe, collaborative environment where creativity can flourish.View more recommendations
