About Nicholas

I am a communication coach with more than 30 years of international experience in industry, higher education, and professional training.

Over the course of my career, I have worked with professionals, managers, engineers, entrepreneurs, and students in Canada, France, and the UK. I have taught and coached communication in a wide range of contexts, including
- presentations,
- project work,
- client meetings,
- teamwork,
- negotiation,
- technical communication, and
- leadership communication.

My experience in business and higher education has taught me that successful communication is rarely about speaking more confidently. It is about understanding the situation, clarifying your objective, identifying your audience's needs, and communicating your message in a way that achieves results.

About the lesson

Every communication situation is different. You may be
- preparing for a presentation,
- meeting with a client,
- leading a project discussion,
- interviewing for a new position,
- pitching services to a prospective customer, or
- handling a difficult conversation.

Our sessions begin by analysing the communication challenge you are facing. Together we identify your objective, consider your audience's perspective, and develop a clear communication strategy. We then work on structuring your message, selecting appropriate language, anticipating questions or objections, and practicing delivery in a realistic way.

Many clients discover that confidence increases naturally once they become clearer about what they want to say, why they are saying it, and how to adapt their message to their audience. The goal is not simply to become a better speaker but to communicate effectively in important professional situations.

Cadence has a good understanding of the requirmements of the public speaking context. She needs to make sure that the content is sufficiently selective to allow her to establish a good connection with the audience and emphasize the points that will be most relevant to them. With further practice she will be an excellent public speaker.

Oleg has done some great work preparing his slide deck. He has put together a persuasive and coherent structure. Now, by removing some of the text and adding icons and visual charts he will make it easier for the audience to grasp ideas quickly and listen closely while he is speaking.

1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
I have always enjoyed helping people communicate in situations which matter the most to them. I think the coaching really began when some of my son’s school friends were making an application to university. They were very motivated to progress in their education and had selected courses that inspired them. I knew they had the ability to succeed, and I wanted to give them every chance of convincing the selection committees that they would be great assets to the programmes they were applying for. We were very happy when all of the applications were accepted and the next phase of their careers could begin!
2) What makes you passionate about your subject?
Realizing that everyone has the potential to succeed and that all the ingredients of the next step are close at hand. Helping people focus on their true objectives and select persuasive evidence with impactful visuals and examples gives a lot of satisfaction. When people are able to present what they really believe in with confidence it is a motivating feeling for everyone involved.
3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
I enjoy taking the time to understand the context that a participant is operating in, and what they would like to achieve. That helps to guide them in the right direction, but all the materials and content for their presentation come from the participant so they have an authentic connection with what they are creating.
4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
In high school I had a very helpful art teacher who listened to what I wanted to communicate and encouraged me to find my own ways to express those ideas. By constantly supporting me he gave me the confidence in my own ability to find solutions that would meet the requirements of the situation. A big thank you to him!
5) What are your keys to success?
Believing that what you wish to create or communicate has its place in the world and will bring benefit to others.
