About Aileen
I use they/them (gender neutral) pronouns. I love art, music, and literature, and I am an avid and voracious reader; a true bibliophile who wants to ignite the same passion in my students. As a native speaker of English, of course I possess a thorough and intuitive knowledge of the language; that said, my specialty is for English literature, not linguistics. Indeed, my bachelor’s was in English Literature and involved an extensive honors thesis project on John Keats’s poem Endymion. Furthermore, as a tutor with Ignite Reading, I have received thorough training in the science of literacy and have helped numerous students build their reading skills through a highly structured set of protocols and assessments. I am also certified in TESOL through Bridge online, where I completed 180 hours of intensive coursework. As a published poet, I have considerable experience reading and writing poetry and drafting critical essays. I understand the dire importance of basic English language comprehension, for without this understanding, one cannot engage with the most superficial aspects of their world. Still, I feel this is only a necessary foundation for deeper and broader learning; there is always more to learn and explore, and I hope my teaching can open windows of understanding amidst a perhaps previously illegible world. So although I hope to help with the practical aspects of language acquisition, and the fundamentals of reading and writing, etc. I am also motivated by a desire to deepen your critical thinking and engagement in the world more generally. I hope to help my students appreciate the richness that literature can offer—

I am a very empathetic instructor who cares deeply about the well-being of my students. As a tutor, I promise to be patient with my students' learning and sensitive to their unique needs, strengths, and deficiencies. I firmly believe that the very best teaching — the teaching I hope to embody — combines a consummate understanding of a subject with an acute sensitivity to the psychological, social, and emotional needs of those being taught. I believe that learning is both relevant for and necessary to the world outside the classroom, and that the world itself is a "text" with which we must meaningfully engage. We must live within the discourses that structure our world.
As a poet and writer, I struggle to negotiate the ambiguous and delicate interstices of art and life; as a teacher, I will work to help deepen and enrich my students' comprehension to enable them to better participate in the larger project of meaning-making, which is necessarily relevant to one's everyday, lived experiences. I hope to help and encourage you to work to transcend the superficial and sometimes tedious aspects of language in order to better appreciate its real and omnipresent relevance….
