About Colin
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have been head of department (Drama) in three different Secondary Schools (Drama) and have taught Drama and Performing Arts from pre-school up to University entrance level. I have taught A - Level and BTEC in Secondary Schools and H.E. Colleges. I have taught English from Key Stage 3 to A-Level, and - as a supply teacher - taught almost anything at a moments notice. I have also taught Drama and English in two UK Prisons!

I have an up to date DBS Certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
Theatre Degree at Dartington College of Arts. Voice with Keith Yon. Dance with Mary O'Donnell Fulkerson and Katie Duck. Improvisation with Ken Campbell, Brith Gof Theatre and Improvisation Shop, London.
Teacher training at University of Central England, 1999 - and every student that I have ever worked with.

I worked as a theatre & creative arts professional for many years before qualifying as a teacher. I believe that a basic grounding in communication and creative thinking techniques and strategies holds well in all situations. I offer these to all.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Drama, English, Performing Arts, Expressive Arts, Communication and Presentation Skills. Improvisation. Theatre Sports. Essay Writing, Creative Writing. I have worked as a Supply Teacher, and know that I can teach almost anything - and am flexible enough to handle almost any situation.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I have a BA (Hons) degree in Theatre from Dartington College of Arts, graduating in 1990. I also have a PGCE in Secondary Drama from the University of Central England that I gained in 1999. I hold a Master Practitioner's Certificate in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and Hypnotherapy (1992)
- How much do you charge?
My basic level of fee is £25 per hour. This is the hour with the learner, not including travel. For sessions beyond a 20 mile radius of the TQ12 postcode, we can negotiate an appropriate fee.
Fees are reduced if booking more than one session for the same calender date (eg: a two hour slot or sessions with more than one learner at the same location). Similarly if booking a number of sessions on consecutive weeks. Message me and we can discuss. It's not about the money - it's about guiding the learner through whatever they need to better their situation.
There are also negotiable fees for group lessons (eg: a class or a communications skills or Improvisation workshop for a number of people at the same venue)
- Where do you teach?
Travel and teaching around Teignbridge (Newton Abbot, Bovey Tracey, Kingsteignton, Kingskerswell, Abbotskerswell etc). Also the South Hams (Totnes, Dartington), Ashburton, Torbay (Torquay, Paignton, Brixham). Other parts of Devon by negotiation. I will teach at the learner's home. There is some scope for working at my house, but this is somewhat limited. I will also teach in small halls, schools, the back office and wherever a space appears. I will happily travel up to a half hour from the Newton Abbot area for a session, but please bear in mind that travel further afield is possible, but would require an extra payment for the milage.
Online sessions can obviously be from anywhere!
- When are you available?
I am available most days. I can be available for sessions during the day Monday - Saturday and also evenings. I have no restrictions about school holidays, but book in good time.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I can teach English from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 4.
Drama and Performing Arts form Key Stage 3 to Post 16 and University/Drama School entry exams and auditions.
Creative Writing, Improvisation skills, creative thinking techniques can be from ages 9 to 109!
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
I am available online at any time, and arrangements can be made for Skype and Google Hangout sessions, so that we can converse face-to-face (useful for working on audition pieces or presentations, for example). I am also quick to respond to email requests, and can give written feedback on essays and dissertations sent to me (even in subject matters not my own - readability and proof-reading, for instance).
- Do you have a personal message for students?
Sometimes it can feel like it's all a bit too much. Will I ever get there? Can I cope with this workload? Is it worth it? Will I ever be 'good enough'?
Much of what has happened to you over the many years of your life may well have convinced you that the answer is too often 'no'.
I get it. I've been there. And come through.
I am here to help you make all of the answers a 'yes'. With extensive knowledge of teaching, learning styles and the psychology of being, I can help you get to whatever you want to achieve, wherever you want to go and whoever you want to be.
