About Abigail
I'm a second-year Classics student at New College, Oxford, and have spent the last 8 years with my head very happily buried in ancient texts. I obtained 11 9s at GCSE, including Latin and Ancient Greek, and three A* at A-Level in Latin, Ancient Greek, and History. I am passionate about keeping ancient languages alive - I won the Sam Hood translation prize in 2023 for a translation of Juvenal, and was in the chorus in an all-Greek production of Orestes last year (but I was much better at the Greek than the dancing...). I have experience teaching younger children, having taught piano to under-10s, and have some experience teaching secondary age children in a club setting at school, as I ran the Classics Society and helped out with Ancient Greek club. I can provide references on request. I have an enhanced DBS check which I'm very happy to send over!

I offer personalised lessons, tailored to the goals and prior experience of the student, and focus on building language skills and comprehension through engagement with real, original texts, using these to guide thorough grammatical tutoring. There's nothing more important than grammar - but the reason I love to read these languages is to time travel! My aim is to foster love of subject while building core competencies. I'm happy to tutor to the exams - I took OCR GCSE and A-level ancient languages, taking the prose comprehension modules (and am also experienced in prose composition at degree level). I can also provide specialised tutoring for the CAT. I'm really happy to give more specific information about my academic results if that's helpful. I also take students who are not working towards any exams - all you need is an interest in the ancient world!

Perfect! Before starting lessons, I was quite apprehensive about Ancient Greek, but after the first lesson I already felt so much more motivated and confident in the subject. Abigail is an amazing tutor and she is great in explaining and prepares a range of exercises to help me fully understand. Every lesson I finish learning so much more and she is also perfect at scheduling the lesson around what I need to secure a high grade. She is very flexible and replies very fast. I couldn't recommend Abigail more!
