About Abby

I have been studying Latin since I was 13 years old! I started in middle school, where the choice of languages to learn was Latin, French, and Spanish. I thought Latin was the most interesting of the three at the time, and I loved the language the moment I had my first class. However, Latin, now, has helped me to learn French so much more easily!

From middle school and high school, where I took Latin courses every year, I graduated in 2018 with my B.A. in Classical Studies (Latin and Greek language and literature), and then I graduated in 2020 with my M.A. in Latin language and literature. I wrote my M.A. thesis about the reception of Virgil's pastoral poetry (poetry that takes place by farms and nature and idyllic places) in the work of three 21st century poets. This was a fascinating but challenging thesis, as no one had ever studied Virgil's appearance in 21st century poetry to such an extent before.

I have been tutoring students of all ages and levels since 2019, mainly via online video conference and tutoring platforms. I try to get my students to start translating right away, as I feel this is the best and fastest way to learn. For my recent advanced students, I have had them translate Virgil, Catullus, Livy's history of Rome, The Tale of Cupid and Psyche by Apuleius, and Ovid's Amores. I also have helped several students with Medieval Latin, which I very much enjoy, though it is a bit outside my expertise.

Other than teaching and enjoying Latin, I am an avid reader, mainly of ghost stories! If we work together, I can guarantee that at some point we will translate the letter of Pliny the Younger that talks about ghost sightings! Clanking chains and moaning ghouls have existed since ancient times!

About the lesson

I have enjoyed my teaching experiences immensely. I love working with the Latin language, as well as teaching English etymology, Greek/Roman mythology and culture.
I try to engage the students as much as possible and have them learn from everything. I follow that wonderful motto given by Miss Frizzle: take chances, make mistakes! I usually start my beginning Latin students with either Ecce Romani or Wheelock's Latin, depending on what style of learning is best for them. I am, however, adaptable to any textbook, and have taught using Oxford Latin, Cambridge Latin, Latin Alive, and several others. I also have worksheets and grammar sheets of my own design to supplement the textbook lessons.

My students have not only learned the Latin language, but also have expanded their vocabulary in English and other languages, and have grasped English grammar more thoroughly. My students also get to know the figures in mythology in great detail, and how they played their parts in ancient culture, and even how they are relevant now.

Because my specialty is in Latin literature, especially Latin poetry, I have all of my advanced students translate poets that I translated as a student, such as: Virgil, Ovid, Catullus, and many more.
