About Rubi
MTAC State Piano Concerto/Solo Competition 2nd place March 2021 - For the competition, I played Mozart's Piano Concerto in D minor, 1st movement. With three months of dedication to this piece, I was nominated as the alternate regionalist (2nd place). Southern California Junior Bach Festival - Region II winner November 2021 - The piece I prepared for this competition was Bach's French Suite No.2 in C minor, BWV813. Hello!
I’m Rubi Choi. While studying classical piano in-depth here at UCLA, I specialize in teaching students ranging from preschoolers to teens.
For young students who are beginning to learn piano, it is crucial to provide them with strong basic knowledge and foundation, not only for cultivating a lifelong love of music but also for enhancing creativity, focus, and confidence. To aid their growth, I focus in all aspects such as having a solid understanding of piano theory, technical skills, learn songs and their ability to perform. Each children have their unique personalities and learning styles, and it is necessary to provide them with individualized piano instruction, and tailoring each lesson to the child's needs and abilities.
Using the Piano Adventures series as our main lesson book, the students will learn new songs each lesson under my guidance for the first half of class. In our second half of class, we will go through the theory book in order to enhance their understanding behind the songs they learn. At the end of each class, the students will be assigned one of the songs we learned in class as homework, which they will practice at least once a day. In the beginning of our next lesson, the students will perform their practiced song to me and we will move forward.
In addition to being able to learn new pieces, I value their performances as well. After each school year ends, it will be ideal for the students to have a small performance time to their parents, so that the parents will have a better understanding of their progress over the year.
Depending on the students' age and focus, the each lessons can range from 30 minutes to an hour, and students can decide whether they want one or two lessons over the week.

Perfect! We hired Rubi to teach piano to our 4-year-old son, who doesn't have any experience. He's usually quite shy and resisted the lesson in the beginning, but Rubi was very patient and waited until he calmed down to teach him the basics.
