About Samir Kumar
My name is Samir, and I am a Civil Engineer with a Master's degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical) from the University of Auckland. Mathematics has always been one of my favorite subjects because I enjoy solving problems and understanding how things work. That passion eventually led me to pursue engineering.
I have several years of teaching experience, having taught engineering subjects including structural design, soil mechanics, surveying, and fluid mechanics. Through teaching, I discovered that I genuinely enjoy helping students overcome challenges and build confidence in their abilities.
I believe every student can succeed with the right guidance. My goal is not only to help students improve their grades but also to help them understand concepts deeply so they can apply them with confidence. I am patient, approachable, and enjoy adapting my teaching style to suit each student's learning needs.
Outside of tutoring, I am passionate about earthquake engineering and geotechnical engineering, and I enjoy continuously learning new things and sharing that knowledge with others. Seeing students gain confidence and achieve their goals is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching, and I look forward to helping each student reach their full potential.

I believe mathematics is best learned by understanding the ideas behind the formulas rather than simply memorizing procedures. My teaching focuses on building strong fundamentals, explaining concepts step by step, and showing students how mathematics applies to real-world engineering and everyday problem-solving.
Every lesson is tailored to the student's current level and learning style. I begin by identifying areas where they are struggling, then work through examples together before guiding them to solve problems independently. I encourage students to ask questions and develop confidence in their own thinking.
I hold a Master of Civil Engineering (Geotechnical) from the University of Auckland and have several years of teaching and mentoring experience, including teaching engineering subjects such as structural design, soil mechanics, surveying, and fluid mechanics. My engineering background has given me a strong foundation in algebra, calculus, trigonometry, mechanics, and applied mathematics.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes, although longer sessions can be arranged if required. I teach Year 9–13 students, including NCEA Levels 1–3 Mathematics and Calculus, as well as first-year university engineering mathematics. Whether you're aiming to improve your grades, prepare for exams, or build confidence in mathematics, I will work with you to help you achieve your goals in a supportive and encouraging learning environment.
