About Helena
I am a civil engineer with a Master's Degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia. Civil engineering is my occupation, but teaching is my true calling. In college, I was a teaching assistant who helped over 100 students learn engineering subjects based in math and physics. My friends frequently come to me for help with mathematical problems they face in real life. I think mathematically but I am skilled at explaining math to people who do not think in terms of numbers and equations. My industry experience as an engineer has kept me sharp in these concepts and has trained me to think in terms of applications rather than theoretically.

I approach each lesson by first starting with the individual student. I find out their likes and dislikes and their strengths and weaknesses, and then I tailor my teaching style for the lesson to fit the student's learning style. If we run into barriers during the lesson, I guide us towards a different way of thinking about the problem until the student understands the concepts fully. I have been trained in child specialist education, which helps me to recognize and understand the different styles of learning and thinking that different people experience. I have taught students of all ages - from pre-school school through college and beyond.
