About Matthew
My name is Matthew, and I’m an upper-division Chemistry student at Cal Poly Pomona with aspirations of becoming a university professor. My teaching approach is example-focused and student-centered learning and discovery. I believe learning should be both enjoyable and personal, so I integrate real-world examples and creative problem-solving strategies to help students truly understand chemistry, rather than just memorizing it. A typical lesson plan would include the introduction of the day's topic, followed by a focused explanation that highlights the key concepts of the topic. We then work through thoughtfully constructed examples together, allowing application and feedback of what they just learned in real time. Each session then concludes with a connection of the material to its real-world applications so students can see the relevance of what they are studying. What sets me apart as a tutor is my genuine passion for teaching. Working with students in a variety of settings for over six years has taught me how to communicate and break down complex subjects into easily digestible pieces, while also teaching me how to be adaptable to each learner. My lessons are for high school students taking standard or AP Chemistry, or university students taking general, analytical, or organic chemistry courses.

I was tutored by Matthew Diaz in college-level Algebra and Statistics, and the experience truly exceeded my expectations. As an older adult returning to school after many years, I was nervous and often doubted my ability to keep up. Math has always been a challenging subject for me, and stepping back into a classroom environment felt overwhelming. From the very beginning, Matthew created an atmosphere where I felt supported, respected, and capable.
Matthew was incredibly patient and never once made me feel rushed or embarrassed for needing extra time or clarification. He explained concepts in a way that made sense to me, breaking down difficult problems into manageable steps and checking in often to make sure I felt confident before moving on. His ability to adapt his teaching style to fit my learning needs showed a level of maturity, professionalism, and genuine care that is rare to find.
What stood out most was his nurturing spirit and calm presence. On days when I felt frustrated or discouraged, Matthew knew exactly how to reassure me and keep me motivated. He believed in my abilities even when I didn’t, and that encouragement made all the difference. Thanks to his guidance, I not only passed my classes—I earned an A and a B, something I never imagined possible.
Matthew’s support restored my confidence in returning to school, and I am truly grateful for the impact he made on my academic journey. I would wholeheartedly recommend Matthew as a tutor to anyone who needs patience, clarity, and unwavering support. He is exceptional at what he does.
As Matthew’s father, I’ve had the privilege of watching him grow into the kind, thoughtful, and capable young man he is today. From a very young age, he has always had a nurturing spirit — the kind of person who naturally steps in to help others. Throughout his own education, Matthew was the friend and sibling everyone turned to when they needed support with schoolwork.
When my wife returned to school as an adult, Matthew was right there for her as well, patiently helping her understand difficult concepts and cheering her on every step of the way. That same patience, compassion, and genuine desire to help others learn has stayed with him.
It’s no surprise that his career path is leading him toward teaching. Tutoring feels like a natural extension of who Matthew is: someone who listens, cares, and is committed to helping others succeed. I recommend him wholeheartedly to any student looking for a trustworthy, encouraging, and capable tutor.I am pleased to recommend Matthew, who has served as a standout volunteer in our church’s Kids Ministry. Matthew is excellent at breaking down complex ideas into simple, engaging explanations which one of the key reasons he connects so well with the children he leads. His patience, clarity, and ability to adapt his communication style make him exceptionally well-suited for tutoring.
Matthew is reliable, organized, and consistently prepared, and he approaches teaching moments with both confidence and humility. I believe these strengths will translate seamlessly into his work as a chemistry tutor.
I am pleased to recommend Matthew based on his strong performance at the YMCA. Matthew consistently demonstrates exceptional attention to detail, ensuring that tasks are completed accurately and efficiently. He approaches his responsibilities with care, organization, and a clear understanding of program expectations.
In addition, Matthew has shown a notable ability to support students with academic questions. He listens carefully, explains concepts in accessible terms, and maintains patience and encouragement throughout the learning process. His presence helps create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking for help and confident in their ability to succeed.
Matthew’s reliability, communication skills, and steady professionalism make him a valuable member of any team.View more recommendations
