One of our best tutors. Quality profile, experience in their field, verified qualifications and a great response time. Gavin will be happy to arrange your first Mathematics lesson.

About Gavin

I am a recent Master of Quantitative Finance graduate from the University of Waterloo and have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematical Finance. I am a CRLA-certified tutor and I have four years of experience teaching math concepts as a math drop-in tutor, an online course instructor and as a freelance math tutor. Outside of tutoring and school I enjoy drawing cartoons and playing the guitar.

About the lesson

After reviewing the tutoring guidelines and making a list of objectives for the tutoring session, I start by checking for understanding. I fill in any gaps or misunderstandings with the material, and ask probing questions to lead students to understand the material themselves. Then I work through two examples (one where I work with them, then I get them to do the work and make sure they understand). I end off with a quick review, and may give them additional problems to try to assess if they are having trouble with the concept. I can work with both high school and college students. I really want to see everyone I help succeed and love seeing students finally reach understanding at the end of a session!

Perfect! Gavin has been an outstanding functions tutor for our daughter. He is flexible with scheduling and always accommodating, which has made balancing school and extracurriculars much easier.

Most importantly, he has helped her consistently achieve strong grades in functions. Beyond the marks, what we value most is that she now genuinely enjoys the subject because she truly understands it. His ability to explain concepts clearly and build her confidence has made a significant difference.

We especially appreciate the focused preparation before exams, which has supported her in earning excellent results. We would highly recommend Gavin to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, supportive, and effective math tutor.

My grade 11 daughter has been tutoring with Gavin for 2 years now. Gavin is a great tutor, very knowledgeable and reliable. My daughter's GPA is much higher than it would've been without his help.

Gavin asks for feedback from students and adjusts his teaching method to accommodate the student's needs.

I would highly recommend Gavin as a tutor with his proven track record with my high school daughter over the past 2 years.

Gavin tutored me with my first year math courses. He managed to pinpoint that I was struggling with abstract concepts so he used concrete examples to solidify my understanding. He also went through the course notes with me 3 to 4 times a week. He made sure I did not have any gaps in my learning by quizzing me at the end of each tutoring session. He was quite accommodating to my schedule and my disabilities. As he was also a math undergrad student before, he was able to point out helpful resources that I did know existed at my university. Overall, he is an excellent tutor who is able to fine-tune his teaching to best fit the student and their needs. I highly recommend him and will most likely have more lessons with him for future courses.

Gavin is a certified mathematics and statistics tutor by both the University of Waterloo and CRLA. He is extensive knowledgeable about statistics and can adapt to your ability and understanding of course material on the fly. I was able to get a 15% mark increase from my intro to stats course (62%-STAT 231) to an upper year stats course (77%-STAT 331) because of Gavin’s tutoring.

I connected with Gavin through UW tutoring services. He was extremely helpful with aiding me in my weekly math assignments as well as answering any questions I had while I prepped for the midterm and final. Gavin made sure to not just provide me with the answer but instead to walk through a similar problem together or offer hints to trigger a specific way of thinking to solve the problem at hand. Even through technical difficulties Gavin found a way to provide feedback and hints so I could continue to work on the assignment. Gavin was critical in me understanding the course content and passing the class.

Find out more about Gavin

1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
I first developed an interest in math in early elementary when learning basic multiplication, and enjoyed doing challenging calculations mentally. I further developed my interest in theoretical math in high school when I was exposed to math contests provided by the University of Waterloo with questions that required higher-order justification and problem-solving skills to answer. For me, it was the high ceiling for potential growth in these challenging skills which encouraged me to keep developing my abilities.
2) What makes you passionate about your subject?
I am passionate about math because of the core concept of proof. Using logic in math you make elegant arguments to demonstrate a claim beyond a shadow of a doubt. These proofs often require creative thinking and require many hours of intense commitment to a challenging research question to develop; it is the thrill of solving these challenging questions that makes the struggle in math worthwhile.
3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
Before officially starting work as a tutor I started getting interested in math education in elementary and high school, when my friends would always ask me for math help; I enjoyed feeling like I was lending my math skills to a social cause. I like seeing the gradual improvement of a student as I work with them as a tutor. Seeing them gradually recall concepts we worked on together and become more autonomous in their problem-solving makes me feel proud as I contribute to their progress. I am a Superprof because I am patient, a good communicator, and well-experienced in applying facilitation strategies to encourage independent problem-solving.
4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
When I was in elementary and high school my math teachers recognized I was a good worker and my effort to develop my mathematical abilities had resulted in me becoming very advanced in the material, and encouraged me to keep pursuing math contests and to apply to STEM fields in university. In particular my IB math teacher from high school encouraged me to keep learning advanced material, stayed after class to go through independent projects I worked on, and supplied textbooks in class for me to learn from. That was very beneficial to me developing a passion for the subject.
5) What are your keys to success?
My keys to success in academics are consistency, cutting out unnecessary activities, and having an interest in what you work on. Being consistent and keeping a regular schedule is essential to developing good habits which allow you to reach your potential. Cutting out unnecessary activities eliminates distractions which can take time away from what matters. And in order to feel motivated to keep studying, it is important to have personal interest in what you do to avoid burnout and disillusionment.
