About Alun

As an undergraduate, I studied biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, drug discovery, entomology and basically all the sciences you could think of due to my program of Integrated Sciences at McMaster University. We also studied four years of mathematics, which I followed by studying mathematics in graduate school. From the knowledge and expertise side of the job, I believe this gives me some legitimacy.

I have been tutoring for 13 years, starting as a high-school student myself, and doing both private and institutional tutoring since. Privately, I've tutored everything from computational linguistics to pure math, and anything in between I needed to. Two of the students I tutored went on to get their bachelor's in computer science and software engineering since.

Institutionally, at McMaster I've TA'd over 10 classes as an undergraduate, and more as a graduate student, so I have experience running tutorials, marking, and running one-on-one tutoring sessions as needed. This gave me a huge amount of experience working with many students at different levels and with different needs, and helped me develop a more adaptive way of teaching.

Given COVID-19, and having to go online, I adapted to online tutoring, and have actually found my preference is for online sessions (I find them more efficient, and can share written work with you after), and so if you'd need in-person tutoring, please let me know if this wouldn't be a good match, as remote sessions would be my preference. If any of this works for you, please let me know. All the best, Alun

My lesson plans are generally dynamic, and pick up on what the student is able to bring to the lesson. In one-on-one, this is easier than in a group setting, but in either case, the key is to identify those points of frustration (which could be rushing on the piano, or guessing on a math problem steps, or relying on pictures to infer words rather than reading), and work at them.

How this looks varies wildly, but one technique I use, especially in math, is to ask the student whether their answer is correct, whether it is or not. If it is, it forces them to re-evaluate each step and ensure they are right, and if not, then it induces a second look-over to potentially identify areas where misunderstandings occur.

This is just one such example, but the workflow of observation, identification of issue, and then identification of the root of the issue, is one that not only phenomenologically improves a student's score over, say, a homework set, but instills in them the fundamental understanding that generalizes to the classroom and repeated testing, and building upon those ideas.

My lessons and tutoring sessions range from anywhere from around middle school-aged children who need help with reading, writing, science, mathematics, etc., all the way to high school kids, generally specializing in mathematics, but I can tutor writing and reading, and sciences, to undergraduates of all four years, now exclusively in mathematics

In-person sessions, if viable, are charged at a higher rate of $35, whereas remote sessions (which I stand by as the better option) are only charged at a rate of $30 to reflect the difference in effort to undertake the session.
