About Oliver
I have been tutoring for the past 5 years, over 250 hours, science and maths all the way to A-level. Each student I have had has seen a boost in confidence, knowledge and grade attainment. All of my tutees achieved their required grades for university in the subjects I mentored.
Maths and science unlock tools that allow us to understand the world around us. Utilising the scientific method enables you to tackle a vast number of challenges in life and equips you with logical methods to solve real-world problems.
Science is what we use to describe the world and mathematics is the language we write with, this is exactly why I enjoy the subject. I will help my students by showing them new ways of thinking and approaching problems that will not only get them through exams but equip them for real-life problem-solving.I believe the key to success in anything is having the confidence in your abilities. Too often I hear "Where is this actually used...?" in a student’s attempt to skip past algebra, I have found the key is to get the student to see the relevance in the subject. This technique of memory association is key in any exam as the student no longer is forced to remember a seemingly esoteric concept but can instead tie it into something they can relate to. I aim to grow confidence in all of my students which is something that will stay with them all the way through university and into the working world.
I am applying to this role to leverage my experience in tutoring to help students reach their aspirations. I am a strong believer that everyone has potential and the gifts to do whatever they put their mind to. They just need to take the jump into the unknown and commit. I am here to say they don't need to make that jump alone.

I am a University of Cambridge graduate who read chemical engineering at Trinity College. I specialise in tutoring the sciences and maths at GCSE and A-level along with auxiliary skills such as the programming languages Python and HTML 5.
A lesson is broken down into three segments. Firstly, I believe it is important to recap on any problem areas the student has experienced our questions that have arisen since our last session. This will give the student the opportunity to get into the problem-solving zone for the lesson and encourage questions about the subject. The next segment takes up the bulk of the lesson and would consist of teaching through the syllabus. It is key at this stage to ensure the student highlights areas of difficulty, this will allow me to not only be meticulous in my explanation but make a note to check the students understanding in the future. The final segment will consist of an overall recap, student lead, with "seeds" of thought that I plant to encourage conversation of the importance of the subject outside of exams. This is a vital step which removes the shackles of exams, imposed by the current education system, and catalyses the growth of interest in the subject. This interest is what takes you to the best universities in the country and drives performance.
I know that to reach your aspirations you need belief in your own ability to achieve, and too often it is this crucial ingredient which has been lost in students. It is my goal to take the embers and fan them into a flame, lifting up my students so they can then stand themselves. It lies in everyone and has the power to take you to the stars. All I want to do is show you your own ability.
Thank you for your time.
