About Trevor
I was born and raised in the UK and developed a passion for learning languages. This journey took me through GCSEs, A-Levels, and a 1st-class degree in French and German from the University of Aberdeen. I lived and worked in France and Belgium for 18+ years, learning French at the coal face of everyday life. I can deeply empathise with learners of all abilities and will help you achieve your language learning goals.

Having worked in international and multicultural environments, I understand the practical importance of languages and the confidence needed to use them effectively. I therefore aim to create a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere where students feel comfortable speaking from the very beginning.
A key part of my teaching approach is helping students build a strong foundation in the most useful and commonly used vocabulary, verbs, and everyday phrases. Rather than overwhelming learners with unnecessary or overly academic language, I focus on the words and expressions people actually use in real-life conversations. This helps students communicate more quickly and confidently in practical situations.
I also place importance on pronunciation and accent work so that students can speak French clearly and be easily understood by native speakers. I help learners develop more natural pronunciation, rhythm, and intonation through regular speaking practice and targeted correction, always in a supportive and encouraging way. My aim is not to eliminate a student’s accent entirely, but to help them communicate smoothly and confidently in authentic conversations.
I tailor lessons around each student’s interests, whether related to business, travel, culture, films, current affairs, or professional development. By using authentic materials such as articles, podcasts, videos, and real-life conversations, I try to make learning both stimulating and fun, while reinforcing high-frequency vocabulary and natural expressions.
I also believe it is important to understand the logic behind a language rather than simply memorising rules. Alongside grammar and structure, I encourage students to recognise patterns in how common words and phrases are used naturally in context. As a speaker of French and German myself, I understand the challenges of language learning and approach teaching with patience, flexibility, and enthusiasm.
Above all, my goal is to help students become confident, independent speakers who genuinely enjoy the learning process and feel able to use the language naturally in everyday life.
