About Mariko
I am an educator with over 20 years of experience, including many years overseas teaching in American international schools within the IB program. My background has given me a deep understanding of diverse student needs and how to adapt learning to different perspectives and cultures. I believe that tutoring goes beyond helping with grades—it’s about supporting the whole learner, building confidence, curiosity, and skills that last a lifetime. My goal is to create engaging, inquiry-based lessons that connect to the real world and inspire students to see themselves as capable, thoughtful, and empowered learners.

I believe learning should be active, engaging, and relevant. My tutoring style is rooted in inquiry-based learning. I encourage students to ask questions, explore multiple perspectives, and make connections between what they’re studying and the real world. I use a mix of interactive discussions, guided practice, and creative activities to make lessons meaningful and memorable.
A Typical Lesson Plan:
Each session begins with a quick check-in to identify the student’s needs and goals for that day. I then introduce the focus topic with an engaging activity. This might be analyzing a text, exploring a historical event, or connecting concepts to current issues. From there, we dive into skill-building through reading, writing, or problem-solving tasks, with plenty of room for reflection and discussion. Lessons end with a short review and a practical next step so students leave confident and prepared.
What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor:
I don’t just teach content...I teach students how to think critically, express themselves clearly, and take ownership of their learning. My sessions are dynamic, supportive, and tailored to each learner’s needs. By focusing on curiosity and confidence, I help students discover that learning can be both challenging and enjoyable.
Who the Lessons Are For?
I specialize in middle and high school students who need support in Social Studies and Language Arts—from improving reading comprehension and writing skills to analyzing history and literature with depth and confidence.
