I have always been interested in science, and how the body works. My ambition is to be able to help people who are suffering from injury or ill-health. To be able to do this, I need knowledge in science, in diagnosis, treatment and personal care. This desire to help stems from childhood experiences in Kurdistan, where I was born. I remember very vividly, being 8 years old and not accepting that violence, fighting, bombing, destruction and killing should be part of daily life. Memories of the extreme suffering of my own people, my relatives, my friends and my neighbors during the Iran-Iraq war (1979-1988) are still fresh in my mind after all these years. Even at a tender age I felt frustration at not being able to do anything to help the injured. Furthermore, the war also affected my education and robbed me of my childhood. This has resulted in my developing a strong determination to study in order to be able to help people.
I studied Experimental Science in high school in preparation to progress to medical school. However, when I applied to enter University, having passed the National Entry Exam, I was refused admission due to internal politics in Iran at the time. My supporting my local party, the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, may have not helped my situation. It became clear that it was not safe for me to remain in Kurdistan, which resulted in my seeking asylum in the UK in 2012 and being given Leave to Remain in 2013. When I arrived in the UK the government placed me in Coventry, where I am still today. My determination was as strong as ever, and as soon as I was given leave to remain, I started a course at the CUC (Coventry University College), in Access to HE – Health and Human Science, which included GCSEs in English and Math’s (from the 16th September 2013 until 25th July 2014). I have achieved BSc in Biomedical Science with honour at Coventry University (May 2017). I feel this illustrates my determination and dedication to achieve goals as I will have progressed from GCSE to BSc in only 5 years from my arrival to the UK.
In an effort to gain practical experience alongside my academic studies I secured a job as a Care Assistant in 2014 with Orion Care Services in Solihull, where I continue to work. My work entails:
-Providing support to service users with learning disabilities.
-Administering medication, ensuring the physical and mental well-being of all service users is maintained.
-Providing advocacy and supported living within the community.
While carrying out this job I have learnt the importance of careful observation of our clients, which helps to be analytical and therefore more efficient in all aspects of my work.
In the summer of 2015, I worked at the Maples Family Medical Practice in Hinkley, as a volunteer worker doing the following:
-Administration aspects regarding the Quality and Outcomes Framework.
-Spending some time with the doctors looking at blood results, and
assisting with investigations of disease symptoms and prevention.
In 2016, I worked in the Summer Placement Opportunity at the Microbiology Project, run by Coventry University. The work focused on culture and identification of relevant micro-organisms from animal fecal samples.
Early 2018 I started working as a Clinical support worker at Warwick hospital as a bank staff. The role has developed me in to three important pathways:
-To participate in appraisals and personal reviews and work to achieve agreed set
objectives.
-To participate in appropriate training and development activities
-To participate in team, professional and personal development activities and
promote commitment to continuous development and improvement.
Fluent in English, Persian, Arabic, and Kurdish causes ability in interacting with a variety of patients showing patience and empathy towards them during my current job and my voluntary work experiences. It gives me an opportunity to work as a Freelance interpreter for AtoZ interpreting, DA, languages and Globaltranslation Service companies especially within health care system, hospitals and GP surgeries. My life experiences, observations and opportunities have strengthened my ambition and determination, and prepared me to continue to pursue my studies to become a professional teacher especially in Biology therefore I decide to apply for private tutoring.
