About Joe
During the first two years of my degree, I provided tutoring to my younger brother in Biology; he struggled with revision and study techniques, confidence and critical thinking. I believe that my encouraging and supportive manner of teaching not only allowed him to achieve an A in Human Biology, but also gave him the skills he required to excel in other subjects. Critical thinking is a skill which many people lack during the earlier stages of academia, and I believe that it’s crucial to be able to analytically criticize ‘facts’ in order to find the truth.
In addition, I have had the opportunity to help fellow students throughout my undergraduate degree. This experience ranges from encouragement and help planning presentations, to stress management techniques during exam time. Furthermore, elements of my degree required me to present information in an accessible and interesting manner to students and staff members with little knowledge of the subject. More informally, I love to talk about Biology to the people in my life, whether this be informing my Mum that beetles don’t have lungs (and the 30 minute conversation on the evolution of anatomy between beetles and other taxa that ensued) or teaching my partner about the history of human evolution. I find fulfilment in helping others, especially when that person achieves great results, and believe that this makes me an ideal tutor for you.

Who am I?
I am a female graduate with a 2.1 in Biological Sciences from the University of East Anglia. Lessons would be suitable for GCSE and A level students looking for extra help outside of lessons or for the opportunity to excel academically.
I want to help young people build confidence by improving critical thinking and study skills, encouraging your progress and providing exam and revision tips. Most importantly I will provide opportunities to ask questions and progress in any topics that you find interesting.
Lesson Structure:
Introduction: A 5 minute activity that uses previously learned content with familiar materials. This activity also allows me to assess your progress and adjust classes accordingly. Also a brief talk about any interesting research on the topic you did between classes.
Objectives: Covering objectives allows us to focus on the questions we’re looking to ask and answer over the lesson.
Main: This part of the lesson would be entirely determined by your needs. This may include introduction of new information using visuals, explanation or written texts. If the topic in the previous lesson was particularly challenging then the lesson may involve completing example tasks to improve your knowledge of that topic.
Practice/Application/Closure: Tasks allowing you to practice the new skills learnt in the lesson. Followed by an activity that requires the application of that knowledge. Finally, talk about how you felt about the material and if there are any tasks for you to complete before our next lesson.
