About Neal
I received my M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from UC San Diego in March 2026, earning a 4.0 GPA. I also earned my B.S. in Biochemistry from UCSD, graduating cum laude with a 3.9 GPA.
As a graduate student, I worked as a TA for undergraduate chemistry and biochemistry courses, where I discovered my love for teaching. I received a Teaching Assistant Excellence Award for my friendly, student-centered teaching style, which I bring into my tutoring. In my work as a TA, I graded exams and helped develop exam questions, which gave me insight into how instructors design problems and what they look for in strong answers.
My approach to teaching focuses on the process of finding the answer, rather than the answer itself. We will work on building the foundations and problem-solving strategies that allow you to tackle complex questions, even when they don’t look exactly like examples you have seen before.
That focus on fundamentals and strategy helped me succeed as a student and test-taker, consistently scoring in the 99th percentile on standardized exams, including the SAT (1510/1600, with 790/800 on the math section) and the national ACS Organic Chemistry Exam (68/70). My goal is to help students build those same skills, so they can approach challenging questions with more confidence and independence.

● Wanting practice with exam-style questions, including how to recognize what a problem is asking and choose the right approach.
● Hoping to move from “I understand it when someone explains it” to “I can solve this type of problem on my own.”
What to expect:
Before our first lesson, I will ask about your goals, current class, and the topics you are working on. Based on this, I will prepare practice questions at different levels of complexity and tailor the session to your needs.
In a typical lesson, we will start with approachable questions so I can see how you think through a problem and identify where you need support. Once we find the areas that need work, I’ll explain the concepts, methods, or problem-solving strategies that are giving you trouble. We will then work through more practice problems, with me providing support as needed, and the eventual goal of helping you solve complex questions on your own.
