About Ben
Hi, I'm Ben, a fourth-year medical student studying at UCL. I graduated last year with a degree in Medical Sciences with Anatomy, Cell and Developmental Biology (Second class honours, upper division) and as a result, I have successfully reached the half way point of my 6-year medical degree. I have now embarked on the clinical stage of my training and am so far relishing every minute!
Whilst my studies are full-time, I am an outgoing person, dedicated to making the most of each and every day by taking advantage of as many opportunities UCL and this fantastic city have to offer. Therefore, alongside my studies, I am looking to do part-time tutoring in order to support myself financially.
I pride myself on being a friendly and approachable person that is capable of developing a good relationship with anyone. An essential requirement of a good doctor is to be able to effectively establish a patient-doctor rapport built on trust and respect and therefore, as a training medical student I engage in and practise this skill every day. Attending a state school that focused on group working and facilitated study environments for mixed academic ability, I developed peer-tutoring qualities such as patience and an appreciation of different learning styles.
I strongly believe in a tutee-centred approach and thus make sure to establish early on which method of teaching will achieve the best results for the student. I am confident that I can deliver whatever style or combinational approach the tutee feels is suited to them, whether that is working through the syllabus in a textbook fashion or focusing more on exam technique via systematically answering past papers. Ultimately, I strive to provide a stress-free and enjoyable environment that will elicit the maximum potential of the student.
I have tutored family friends back home in an informal setting up to A-level grade. Throughout university, I have tutored medical peers in lower years. I have had experience in sports coaching, as a black belt in kickboxing teaching lower grades and more recently as a coach for children's rugby.
My interests and hobbies outside of medicine involve sport, music, amateur dramatics and travelling. I am also a member of the University Air Squadron (UAS). Through the UAS I am able to pursue adventurous sporting activities that I am passionate about, such as SCUBA diving - I have recently obtained my Advanced Open Water Qualification - flying and skiing. I enjoy nothing more than experiencing, first hand, the cultures of other countries and therefore, am determined to work abroad in the not too distant future. I spent 2 months this summer exploring South East Asia and 2 months the previous summer travelling around Europe. This summer I’m participating in a charity climbing expedition of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for a very worthy charity, ‘Hope for Children’.
