I believe that you progress better if you are clear about what kind of music you see yourself playing eventually and if you have influences in that genre, instrumentalists you look up to.
My teaching style involves making my student put a lot of practice on the basic movements (hands and fingers) initially while teaching them about basic music theory and chords and scales
