About Sean
I have been a musician since I was eight, starting with violin. As I've gotten older, I've grown to love the guitar and have learned to appreciate music theory and listening skills. I obtained my degree in music a few years ago and have been playing in bands, as well as writing my own songs, for many years now. I have been teaching for a few years and have experience with many different types of learners (and lengths of attentions spans) and have built up methods to facilitate progress and to keep students focused.

Hi there! I have a Bachelors of Music Degree and I teach guitar and popular music theory. Theory is not usually taught in schools but is essential for being able to understand music and develop your musical ability on your own. I focus on this fact when teaching guitar and make sure the pupil understands what they are playing and why it works.
I have experience teaching children and adults between the ages of 3 and 50 and have been doing so for several years. I currently volunteer at Heart and Sound which is a charity organisation that focuses on music and film-making. I teach School of Rock there which includes giving advice and tips on playing their instruments and playing as a band. I also teach the children to use music recording software and help them record music for their portfolios. I am an approachable and friendly teacher who is willing to have the patience to allow a pupil to properly click and get the hang of something before moving on. I will teach them songs that outline a new technique to add to their repertoire and also provide them with the means to learn and grow in their own time. By trying to understand the type of music that the pupil likes I can incorporate this into my lessons. This will encourage the pupil to practice more in their free time if it is songs that they enjoy learning and will also give them more incentive to learn songs on their own which is a very important skill.
I will try to teach music over a wide variety of genres in order to build an appreciation for all kinds of music. This sort of open-mindedness is very useful to a budding musician. There are elements to learning guitar that may seem boring such as repetition or learning scales. I will make sure that the pupil knows why these are necessary and why they are helping them to learn whilst also making an effort to keep lessons interesting.
I have played the guitar for 12 years and am at a degree level skill-wise. I have spent 4 years studying music at Edinburgh College (I completed my degree at Edinburgh college which partnered with Kingston University to provide the course which is why my qualification is from Kingston). During this time I have gained experience in song-writing, performance, solo performance, composition, arranging and orchestration, music technology and studio. I also have a qualification for Grade 6 popular music theory although I have a good knowledge of up to grade 8 theory. In addition to guitar, I also play bass guitar and violin. I play in several bands, one of which used to be the in-house band for an open mic held at Monty’s bar. I gig regularly with my band and am very experienced in the live performance side of guitar.
If your child is going to be taking their performance exam at school I can ensure that they pass and show them that there is not as much to be nervous about as they think. I am familiar with songs used in examinations and the techniques that must be showcased. It is very helpful to have a tutor for the exams to guide the pupil through the best ways to tackle these songs.
I will incorporate musical theory into guitar lessons or I can teach theory on its own. A grasp of musical theory helps pupils to be able to understand why music works and will also give them a better appreciation for music. I am very familiar with what is required in theory exams and will help the pupil to pass with the highest marks.
Another important skill to have in music is good “aural perception”. This is the ability to understand what is happening musically just by hearing and recognising scales, intervals and harmonic movements. This is a skill that I will help to build up slowly by training the pupil to recognise intervals and cadences. Eventually the pupil will be able to learn complicated music just by hearing it. This ability is what separates the good musicians from the great ones. I also aim to provide the pupil with the tools and knowledge to be able to improvise on their instrument. Jamming with other musicians is what music is all about in my opinion and is a very effective way to learn from other people, not to mention that it helps build communication and social skills. By encouraging the pupil to play with other musicians and perhaps join or start a band, this will help to build confidence. I found this myself when I was in High School and learning to play guitar.
