About Reuben

I’m a Melbourne-based music teacher offering guitar, songwriting, composition, and music theory lessons for all ages and skill levels. With over 15 years of experience and a Bachelor of Music in Composition & Contemporary Guitar, I’ve helped more than 300 students reach their musical goals - from playing their first chord to recording original songs.

My teaching is personalised, flexibile and goal-focused. Whether you want to strum your favourite songs, improve your voice, prepare for exams, or write your own music, I’ll create a lesson plan just for you. I’ve taught in schools, youth programs, community settings and my own private studio, so I understand how to adapt lessons for different learning styles.

Music should be fun, inspiring, and achievable. Let’s work together to unlock your musical potential!

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

Age 7 I first grabbed the Mic to sing some country classics in the small NZ town, Balclutha.
I started learning guitar to support my voice at age 10.
  • Is there a particular type music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

Fat Freddy's Drop and Kora are my go to!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or 'riveting' lesson you could personally give to one of your students.

To start incorporating the use, understanding and patterns of modes within a key.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

Saxophone, because i have no idea where to start!
  • What are your keys to success?

    Discipline, imagination, and risk-taking.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

The 3 Js: Jack Black:Too funny; Jimi Hendrix: We gun party; Jack White: Get weird and whacky
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your musical journey, or your days at 'music school'.

The grind. I was that close to quitting after just half a year at guitar. I didn't feel like it was happening, no progress. Then my mother encouraged me to give it 'one more term.' Now here i am!
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I personable, and believe a connection is the most important component of a student teacher relationship. I have patience, and an understanding that the musical journey is never ending. I am truly passionate about music at all levels!
