About Christopher
Choosing the right teacher can sometimes involve a lot of thought, but hopefully Christopher's musical experience will help to guide you in your decision. His relaxed, friendly and encouraging approach to teaching will help you to grow in both assurance and confidence.
Christopher Langdown has been widely acclaimed as a pianist and chamber musician. Born in Sutton Coldfield, he had initial lessons privately with Fay Madeley and later with Professor Malcolm Wilson at the Junior Department of the Birmingham Conservatoire. During his teens, Christopher gained recognition by winning lots of piano competitions and decided to pursue a career in music. After completing his A-levels at Bishop Walsh Catholic School, Christopher auditioned for the UKs top music colleges and was delighted to be offered places at them all. He subsequently studied for six years with Professor John Barstow at the Royal College of Music in London. As a postgraduate, Christopher graduated with a master's degree attaining a Distinction for his final recital and was twice selected by The Wall Trust as a piano scholar of "outstanding talent".
In recognition of his musicianship, Christopher was nominated at the Royal College to perform the music of Shostakovich to the legendary exponent Tatiana Nikolaeva. He was also invited by the RCM to play for the Oscar-nominated piano movie, Shine, starring Geoffrey Rush (The Kings Speech, Shakespeare in Love, Pirates of the Caribbean) but sadly had to turn the role down due to other engagements.
Christopher has acquired numerous awards and was finalist and prize-winner in the 1997 Brant UK Pianoforte Competition which attracted artists internationally. He has since given recitals at the major London concert halls, including Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, LSO St Luke's, Fairfield Halls and St John's Smith Square and appeared at music festivals throughout the UK and Europe. As a concerto soloist he has performed popular concertos such as the Rachmaninov No.2, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto, as well as more unusual works such as J.S Bach's Concerto for 4 Keyboards, BWV 1065.
Following his debut recital at London's Wigmore Hall, critics described Christopher's performance as "an adventurous programme by a gifted artist...some of the finest Beethoven playing I have heard in years" and commended his "undoubted musicality and total pianistic technique".
He has also enjoyed acclaim for his collaborations with other internationally renowned musicians, including the tenor James Gilchrist and the Fitzwilliam, Martinu, Sorrel and Maggini String Quartets.
Radio and TV appearances have included live concert broadcasts, interviews for arts programmes and two radio performances of Christopher's own solo piano compositions.
In 2019, his Wigmore Hall classical CD was selected by Divine Art as "Album of the Month" and was also featured on BBC Radio 3.
Aside from his concert career, Christopher has enjoyed performing at over 2,000 weddings and events which has included playing for celebrities and The Royal Family.
As an experienced teacher with over 25 years experience, Christopher can offer private piano lessons at his teaching studio in Sutton Coldfield or alternatively via Zoom.
Aside from his musical career, Christopher enjoys family life and lives with his wife and two children.
