My teaching philosophy is built on a simple truth: technical mastery and artistic expression are not separate goals, but two sides of the same coin. My approach is uniquely informed by my current career as a performing artist with ensembles like the Akron Symphony and my training under masters like Ilya Kaler at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
My Methodology: The Three Pillars of Excellence
1. Foundational Rigor: We build an unshakable technical foundation through focused work on scales, études, and bowing techniques. Precision is everything.
2. Artistic Interpretation: Technique serves the music. We go beyond the notes to develop phrasing, tone color, and emotional depth, turning pieces into compelling stories.
3. Real-World Application: I provide invaluable insights from the professional world, including orchestral audition techniques, chamber music collaboration skills, and stage presence.
A Typical Lesson Outline:
Technical Warm-up (10 mins): Scales and arpeggios tailored to your current repertoire, focusing on intonation and bow control.
Étude Work (15 mins): Addressing a specific technical challenge (e.g., spiccato, shifting) to build your skill set.
Repertoire Development (30 mins): Deep dive into your piece(s). We'll work on phrasing, dynamics, and overcoming difficult passages, with play-along demonstrations.
Goal Setting & Feedback (5 mins): Clear practice objectives for the week and constructive feedback on your progress.
