About Simon
I've tutored math for eight years, was a TA at UofT St George for six, lectured in engineering linear algebra and calculus, coordinated a pre-university preparation course (twice) and won a Daniel B. Delury (teaching) Award from the math department, all while a pure math undergraduate. I currently teach competition math (AMC, CIMC, CSMC, Euclid) and tutor online. My students are constantly surprised that they actually (finally) understand the material. I find this both inspiring and depressing.

Math teaching is awful. Teachers/professors give insufficient explanations, avoid deep questions, and (inexplicably) skip huge amounts of steps – it's amazing anyone ever learns anything. This drove me mad when I was a student – I ended up teaching myself almost everything. When I became a tutor, then a TA, then a lecturer/course-coordinator, I taught my students the way I wished I had been taught – and (low and behold) they actually learned. The most common piece of feedback I get is "things actually make sense when you teach them" – this is a strange compliment, since it implies that the norm in math is explanations not making sense, but that's the way it is, unfortunately. I get tremendous satisfaction out of making things "actually make sense" – call it revenge against the education system that I had such a bad experience with. I don't teach tricks, shortcuts, or memorization. If you actually want to understand math on a deep level (and easily clobber your courses as a result) I'm the tutor for you. If you want a way to get around having to learn/understand, I can't help with that – there is no shortage of tutors who can/will, however, and I wish you the best of luck with that.

Perfect! Simon is an outstanding mathematics tutor for university-level Calculus and Linear Algebra. My daughter from UofT experiences him, and lessons go very well as he listens very carefully, quickly identifies gaps in understanding, and explains concepts at exactly the right pace.
