About Amir

**Important Notice: I am currently fully booked and unable to take on new students. This notice will be removed if availability opens up. Thank you for your understanding.**

I am an award-winning, qualified mathematics teacher and subject specialist with a Master's in Mathematics from the University of Warwick, a Mathematics PGCE from the UCL Institute of Education, and a MicroMasters in Data, Economics, and Design of Policy from MIT. Before dedicating myself to full-time private tuition, I taught at Eton College and Cambridge Education Group, and served as a teaching assistant for courses led by Nobel Laureates at MIT.

With extensive global experience, I've had the privilege of teaching hundreds of students from over 60 countries. My expertise spans a diverse array of curricula, age groups, and student needs—from young learners to university-level students, ranging from those struggling with the basics to contenders in national mathematics competitions, and everything in between.

For me, teaching transcends the mere transmission of knowledge; it’s about igniting a lasting enthusiasm for mathematics and broader scholarly pursuits. In addition to improving understanding, confidence, and passion for mathematics, I imbue students with qualities that extend well beyond their mathematics education. This includes enhancing their ability to think critically, reason abstractly, articulate thoughts concisely, develop sharp analytical skills, and apply knowledge across various contexts.

In addition to teaching, I specialise in guiding students to secure placements at the world’s most prestigious schools and universities, with a particular focus on UK and US institutions, including Oxbridge, the Russell Group, and the Ivy League. Additionally, I have a wealth of experience in mentoring students, preparing them for success in school, university, and their future careers.

My track record speaks for itself: all of my students have achieved or surpassed their target grades, with some advancing by as much as five grades. They regularly gain admission and scholarships to the world’s most prestigious schools and universities, and many have won accolades for their outstanding achievements, including securing top positions in national mathematics competitions. My unwavering commitment to excellence is evident in the unanimous 5-star reviews I have received across tutoring platforms, with most of my clientele coming from referrals by previous clients and esteemed educational professionals.

My dedication to teaching has earned me numerous awards, including being named a Scholar at the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. I have twice received the MIT Teaching Certificate of Excellence for my role as a teaching assistant for Nobel Prize winners Professor Esther Duflo and Professor Abhijit Banerjee, and Dr. Rachel Glennerster, President of CGD.

In closing, I firmly believe that mastery in mathematics has an impact far beyond one's mathematics education. Mathematics permeates every field of scientific endeavour, from helping explain the colours of the sunset, to the architecture of our brains. It plays a pivotal role in all aspects of modern society, including finance, economics, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, to name a few. I believe that prioritising one’s mathematics education is vital to the future prospects of an individual and the position they will play in society. But aside from utility, mathematics, when understood, is inspiring and fun. As Bertrand Russell wrote in Mysticism and Logic (1918) “Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty".

Outside of education, my interests in policy design, economics, and technology fuel my contributions to ventures that aim to create positive social impact. In my free time, I enjoy participating in various sports—having competed in several disciplines—and I love to travel.

My teaching approach centres on the idea that many students struggle with mathematics due to gaps in foundational understanding, often overlooked in traditional educational settings. Unfortunately, students don’t always seek guidance as some of these topics are wrongly perceived as 'simple', or teachers might not be sufficiently equipped to explain them thoroughly. I see this issue across all ages and levels of attainment. In mathematics, concepts build upon one another, so at some stage, this lack of understanding catches up with students and forms a barrier to their learning.

To address this, I start by assessing and reinforcing students' foundational understanding. Once this solid base is established, we can scaffold knowledge, delving deeper into complex topics and looking at them in a more thorough and enriching way. Finally, at the top end, the focus shifts to one of deep exploration, challenging problem-solving, and honing exam strategies.

Consistent across all learning journeys is my emphasis on true comprehension over mere memorisation. This approach encourages students to explore the 'why' behind mathematical concepts— the essence of genuine understanding and the spark for a profound appreciation of the subject. Additionally, I ensure students not only grasp mathematical ideas at their core but also excel in expressing this understanding in exams, where my experience as an examiner has proved to be invaluable.

For most of the lesson, students will be solving problems, each problem presenting a different piece of the puzzle, until they reach that “aha” moment where they have mastered the concept. By asking a series of well thought out questions, rather than lecturing, I help students discover for themselves underlying misunderstandings that they may have and address them. With over a decade in education, I've refined my lesson structures to strike a balance between flexibility, which caters to unique student needs, and maintaining a coherent learning arc. My research, experience, diverse interests, and extensive network help me weave narratives around mathematics, catering to individual interests, sparking curiosity and inspiring students to learn more. I place strong emphasis on empowering students to take charge of their learning, with the aim of nurturing independent learners.

Collaboration is key. Working closely with the family, I design a bespoke tutoring plan. Where appropriate, students will have access to an online workbook containing a repository of class notes, assignments, and other materials, ensuring transparency and systematic learning. This dynamic approach allows me to continually assess and adjust based on individual progress.

Find out more about Amir

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

From a young age, I was fascinated by the elegance and logic of mathematics. My deep passion for the subject truly blossomed during my formative years at the University of Warwick. Recognising the transformative power of education and seeing the difference I could make in students' lives, I was drawn towards teaching. I started my career teaching at some of the world's most prestigious institutions, including a notable tenure as Mathematics Master at Eton College. Transitioning from teaching at a school to private tutoring was a conscious choice, driven by the desire to provide a highly personalised learning experience, tailored to each student's unique strengths and weaknesses. This decision has enabled me to guide students globally, illuminating their mathematical journeys and fostering a love for the subject.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

My expertise spans from foundational concepts for young learners right through to advanced topics for university scholars. I thoroughly enjoy discussing the intricacies and practical applications of mathematics with my students.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

During my academic pursuits, several educators left a lasting impact. Notably, being both taught by and serving as a teaching assistant for Nobel Prize winners Professor Esther Duflo and Professor Abhijit Banerjee, as well as Dr Rachel Glennerster, was a transformative experience. Their dedication to their subjects and commitment to nurturing student growth was truly inspiring.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, adaptability, profound understanding of, and a passion for the subject are paramount. A tutor should comprehend the unique learning styles of each student, tailoring their methods to cater to individual strengths and challenges. Furthermore, genuine enthusiasm for teaching and effective communication are crucial.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

At the start of my teaching career, I distinctly remember a session with a particularly bright student who was struggling to grasp the complexities of combinatorics. Over several lessons, we delved deep, breaking down the topic into its fundamental principles. One day, using a real-world example involving a set of coloured marbles and possible arrangements, everything clicked for him. The joy and sense of achievement reflected in his eyes were unforgettable. This moment wasn't just about overcoming a mathematical hurdle; it was a testament to the power of perseverance, tailored guidance, and the importance of relating abstract concepts to tangible scenarios. It served as a vivid reminder of why I chose the path of teaching - to witness and facilitate such transformative moments in a student's academic journey.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

The abstract nature of certain mathematical topics can pose challenges in teaching. Bridging the gap between foundational understanding and complex concepts requires patience and innovation. However, my diverse teaching experience has equipped me with strategies to make even the most abstract topics tangible and relatable.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

While mathematics remains my primary passion, my heart truly lies in teaching. The privilege of guiding a student's academic journey, witnessing their growth, and playing a role in their success is unparalleled. Beyond the classroom, my interests span development economics and entrepreneurship, where I collaborate with start-ups, charities, and other institutions.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

Being a Superprof is more than academic mastery. It's about forming genuine connections with students, understanding their aspirations, and guiding them towards both academic brilliance and a genuine appreciation for the subject. My global exposure has equipped me with cultural sensitivity and refined my bespoke teaching methodologies, catering to a diverse range of students. My unwavering dedication to their success, vast experience, and consistent track record of excellence epitomise the essence of a Superprof.
