I taught incoming freshmen English and speech at the University of Iowa for three years. I also received professional training on pedagogy and tutored English to students of all abilities.
I've also worked as a professional writer for a decade and spent years honing my craft. Having started as an enthusiastic beginner, I have gleaned tricks and tips and tools to help strengthen even the paltriest prose. I love to help improve a piece of writing and give writers a new lens from which to view their own work.

My style varies based on the task at hand and the student's goals. If the student is studying vocabulary for an upcoming test, for instance, I will gather appropriate materials for review and help the student master the concepts they most struggle with.
If the student is in the brainstorming stage lists, lists and research are essential. If we are in the middle of writing an essay, we might look at transitions, evidence presence, and logical structure. I like to find and analyze good examples of strong writing that is trying to achieve the same goal, for inspiration.
I also like to have tutees/writers read their essays aloud. Reading the essay aloud is key to diving into its structure, and flow. Read alouds help identify word precision, syntax strengths and weaknesses and over all flow. It also helps the writer take ownership of and connect to their own writing.
