The student and James will work closely together to design a curriculum targeting specific film disciplines of interest to the student: Directing, Producing, Feature Screenwriting, or ADing. James has worked in nearly every department at some level and has much general knowledge that students of every ambition and career goal will find useful. However, his specialties are as noted above. He has trained hundreds of PA’s across 15 years of First ADing, and is happy to help beginners learn the techniques, processes, and abilities necessary to thrive in a practical career. The individually designed curriculum will consist of instruction, self-study reading recommendations, film viewing requirements between sessions, with a focus on analysis and understanding, combined with hands-on assignments that will then be evaluated at each level, technically, and creatively from conception to post-production and discussed with dedicated, specific, insightful feedback designed to support a student’s creative vision, while instilling tools, techniques, and perspectives designed to help them elevate their vision, and craft. Studying film with James R.W. Hiatt means learning from a seasoned industry professional with hands-on experience across 40+ features, TV, music videos, and award-winning indie projects. His lessons combine real-world production insight with a deep understanding of storytelling, directing, and on-set dynamics. Students gain not just technical knowledge, but also the creative instincts and leadership skills essential to thrive in the industry. James brings a passionate, collaborative approach; infusing each lesson with hard-earned wisdom, humor, and a genuine investment in his students’ growth.
