About Bryan
I’m an award-winning independent cinematographer with professional experience across narrative film, documentary, commercial, and experimental work.
My projects have screened at film festivals and received recognition for cinematography and visual storytelling — experiences that have allowed me to collaborate with directors and creative teams in both emerging and established production environments.
My career has been built through hands-on production, crafting visual language that supports story, performance, and emotional tone. I’ve worked across small, agile crews and larger sets, giving me a practical understanding of how cinematography functions in real-world filmmaking.
Beyond shooting, I’m deeply invested in the craft itself — from lighting theory and composition to camera systems and on-set workflow. I approach every project with preparation, intentionality, and a strong respect for collaboration.
As a tutor, my goal is to create a professional, supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting creatively, and developing their own visual voice. Whether you’re just starting out or refining advanced skills, I bring patience, clarity, and real production insight into every session.

Teaching Approach & Methodology:
My teaching approach is rooted in real-world production experience. I focus on helping filmmakers understand not just how to use cameras and lighting, but why visual choices matter in storytelling.
I break cinematography down into practical, repeatable principles — composition, lighting motivation, lens choice, camera movement, and visual tone — so students can apply what they learn immediately to their own projects.
Lessons are collaborative and tailored to each student’s goals, whether that’s shooting their first short film, refining professional work, or preparing for larger productions.
Typical Lesson Structure:
A typical lesson is built around three parts:
1. Foundations / Concept
We cover a focused topic such as lighting setups, shot design, camera systems, or visual storytelling theory.
2. Practical Application
We translate the concept into real-world scenarios — building lighting diagrams, analyzing scenes, reviewing student footage, or planning shoots.
3. Implementation & Feedback
Students leave with actionable steps, exercises, or shot plans, followed by review and critique to accelerate growth.
The goal is always to connect theory to execution.
What Sets Me Apart?
What differentiates my teaching is that it comes directly from working production environments.
As an award-winning independent cinematographer, I collaborate with directors to build visual language that serves character and story through restraint rather than spectacle. I bring that same philosophy into my lessons — focusing on intention, clarity, and emotional impact rather than gear obsession alone.
Students learn how cinematography functions on real sets: communication, efficiency, creative problem-solving, and visual consistency under constraints.
Who My Lessons Are For?
My lessons are designed for filmmakers at multiple levels, including:
- Beginners learning camera fundamentals and lighting basics
- Film students developing visual storytelling skills
- Directors who want to better communicate with cinematographers
- Owner-operators refining composition and lighting technique
- Working professionals looking to elevate their visual language
Whether you’re shooting your first short or preparing for narrative or commercial work, lessons are adapted to your experience level, goals, and available equipment.

This is the most reliable hardworking man in the industry. After working on many projects over the last couple years with Bryan, there is no one I trust more than him. A true professional and an inspiring artist. I could go on singing his praises because they should be heard.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Bryan Mackenzie for over three years on multiple film and video projects. He’s not only a talented filmmaker but also an exceptional teacher, able to break down complex concepts in cinematography, lighting, and storytelling into clear, actionable steps.
What sets Bryan apart is his patience and ability to meet students where they are. He encourages experimentation, provides thoughtful guidance, and inspires confidence, helping each person develop their own creative voice.
One experience that stands out is when we co-led a narrative short. Bryan guided the team through every step, sharing his expertise while empowering everyone to contribute. That same approach translates perfectly to tutoring, giving students practical knowledge, creative insight, and real-world skills.
Any student working with Bryan will leave more confident, capable, and inspired. He’s a tutor who truly makes learning filmmaking exciting and accessible.View more recommendations
