About John

Let me share with you my extraordinary thirty-year career in photography. Listed in Lurzer's Archive, World's Top 200 photographers, I have worked in advertising at the highest level for clients including American Express, American Airlines, Air France, Levis, Volvo, Volkswagen and Bentley. I have won numerous awards including recognition from D&AD, PDN, IPA, Graphis, Communication Arts, and the Association of Photographers; six of which awarded silver, and seven gold. My book Jew, published by Skira, won first prize at the International Photography Awards in New York in 2019 and was exhibited in London the following year. I am an associate lecturer and part of the MA Commercial Photography teaching team at UAL London College of Communication, and an MA Photography graduate from the Royal College of Art. Outside of photography I am a keen swimmer. In 2009 I successfully swam across the English Channel in a team of four, and in 2014 completed a swim around Manhattan with the same team.

Our first lesson will be an informal chat about YOUR goals, and what YOU want to achieve from photography. Perhaps it is to pass an exam, start a successful career, or just brush up on your knowledge and a portfolio review. I can cover technical know-how, (analogue, digital, and lighting), large format cameras, commercial applications as well as contemporary art theory, philosophy and practice. Areas of photography I am able to teach include; 1. How to become a photographer. 2. The analogue process, shooting and processing. 3. The digital process. 4. A history of photography, from Niepce to Steichen to Avedon and Penn. 5. An introduction to lighting (better in person). 6. The anatomy of a camera, and 7. The anatomy of a studio, both are invaluable to prospective assistants as well as commercial photographers. 8. What is contemporary and conceptual art photography all about. 9. A portfolio review.

After a first chat, I prefer to book a series of four lessons. This really gives you the time to understand technical processes without rushing, and gives me the time to teach properly, listen to your questions, and clarify any difficulties. First lessons are better if you can bring something; such as an example of photography you like, or an example of your own work which you would like to improve.

  • 1) When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I began my commercial practice in 1994. I assisted a number of very high profile photographers including Nadav Kander and David LaChapelle before embarking on my own career. Timing was very important, not to 'jump too early' nor leave it too late.
  • 2) Which artists or works affect you the most?

In a commercial sense, I was always deeply moved by Irving Penn, his attention to detail and lighting, as well as those who proceeded him commercially, Alfred Steiglitz, Edward Steichen, Richard Avedon. And the father of the 'glaneur', Walker Evans.
  • 3) What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

Looking; photography gives you the permission to stare, use it.
  • 4) What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Stay with the problem. In my experience my best pictures come either as the first of the day or sometimes the last. The first picture has come using my instincts, the last has come from perseverance.
  • 5) How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Photography can come at you on many levels. There is the surface of a photograph, which can prick you with its subject matter or its atmosphere. Then there is the subtext, or the meaning within a photograph, which writers and philosophers have discussed for decades. This may include themes of identity, power, agency, memory, time and much more.
  • 6) What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

My book entitled 'Jew' and published by Skira, Milan, is a series of 120 portraits from 12 countries around the world. It won first prize at the International Photography Awards (IPAs) in New York in 2019.
  • 7) Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

I am continuously amazed by people with a love of capturing images. Looking and seeing something with the impulse to photograph it, just to say; "I'm here, I saw this". This is one of life's great joys.
  • 8) Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Being interested in other people, their lives and their experiences.
