About Steven
For over 20 years, composing, performing, recording, and learning about music has been my passion. I began first as a self-taught musician, learning how to play the drum-set by listening to records. I eventually learned how to play the piano, guitar, and bass guitar in college. While studying music and anthropology at Pasadena City College, I began composing classical pieces for a string ensemble and continue to perform with small jazz groups. I became interested in the field of ethnomusicology and branched out, taking lessons in a variety of world music instruments, such as the tabla set in Hindustani traditional classical music, the talking drum in West African percussion music and the berimbau performed in Brazilian samba, incorporating these styles and rhythms in my composition. I have been involved in education for over 10 years, leading individual students and small musical ensembles in preparation for school events and performances. I am currently the music program director for a company that services afterschool musical enrichment programs located in Los Angeles.
