About Kate
Hello! I'm Kate, and I'm a lover of reading, writing, literature, and yes, even of grammar. I've always been fascinated by words, what they mean and where they come from and I love to share that passion with my students. My undergraduate degree at the University of Cambridge allowed me to study (among other things) the history of the English language, which I found fascinating. After that I did a PGCE in order to become a classroom teacher, since I've always loved working with children too. I've had several years experience teaching in primary school, and now I home educate my own children (10 and 12). I hope to meet you soon - I'd love to work alongside you and help you discover the wonderful world of language and literature.

Are you looking for individualised tuition for your child? All of my English tutoring sessions, whether it's phonics, early reading and writing, analysis of English literature or essay writing skills, are tailored to the student's ability and interests. This helps to keep sessions both fun and relevant for the learner.
After an initial session in which the student and I get to know each other and I carry out an informal assessment, I will make a recommendation to parents on length and frequency of sessions and what skills or topics we will cover. For younger learners practising early reading and writing skills, two 30 minute sessions a week may be most beneficial. Older learners may benefit more from longer sessions.
Every lesson begins with a short game or activity designed to build relevant reading and writing skills in an engaging way while helping the student feel at ease. We then move on to a longer activity to help grow the learner's abilities and confidence. Plenty of feedback is provided for parents. If desired, homework can also be provided to help learners develop their potential even further.
As a qualified teacher, with several years' experience teaching in UK schools, I have a sound understanding of the UK curriculum and how to implement it in a relevant and engaging way. I also have experience as a professional writer and I critique writing for young learners and for adults.
My English tuition is ideal for children aged 5-14 who want to:
- develop emerging reading and writing skills
- fill any gaps in spelling
- go from writing simple sentences to well-structured paragraphs
- learn to write reports, essays or other long-form pieces
- build reading fluency and/or comprehension
- learn how to design and structure an excellent story
- enjoy, understand and analyse literature
I love English - language and literature alike - and I hope to be able to share that love with your learner as I help them grow their own skills, find their own voice and learn to express their own ideas with confidence and panache!
