About Mike
Hi, I’m Mike! I recently completed my integrated Master’s degree in Mathematics at the University of St Andrews, ranked among the UK’s top three universities for Mathematics.
I also have professional experience working with secondary-school pupils at The Portsmouth Grammar School. I’m friendly, patient and approachable, and aim to create an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing confidence in their mathematical ability.

I offer hour-long lessons in GCSE Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Additional Maths FSMQ, A-Level Maths and Further Maths.
I always prioritise understanding the concept over simply memorising the method. Knowing why something works is the surest way to knowing how it works and when to use it. However, I also know all too well that abstract mathematical concepts, especially at A Level, can be daunting!
I start with simple examples, building intuition and confidence before moving towards less familiar problems and independent problem-solving. I take a friendly and encouraging approach, inviting students to explain their thinking so that I can spot and gently correct misunderstandings along the way. For students preparing for public examinations, I combine this approach with targeted past-paper practice and exam technique.

I've known Mike since we were at school together, and he was one of the few people I wanted to keep in touch with through and after university. Besides being so sharp and knowledgeable in Maths and many other subjects, he was always a kind and down-to-earth person. He can switch quite happily between cracking jokes and patiently helping explain a concept to another person. And he would always handle his own work quietly and confidently. I absolutely think he has just the right qualities that make a great teacher.
Highly recommended!
I had the pleasure of being tutored by Mike on different maths topics such as differential equations. He was very patient and explained every topic thoroughly and methodically until I understood.
It was incredibly helpful for me and I will definitely make use of his sessions again in the future!Mike always seemed to be amongst the strongest students in our classes together at the University of St Andrews, and based on our conversations on mathematical topics, I have every confidence that he’d be a stellar tutor!
