About Anastasia
Anastasia Evsigneeva is a contemporary artist, dancer, contortionist, and educator of Russian origin, based in Montréal. Working across contemporary dance and circus, she explores the body’s expressive possibilities through an interest in the grotesque, experimentation, and physical extremes. Her practice encompasses cross-training, performance, film, collaborative creation, and teaching.
Anastasia is a graduate from the Professional Program of the School of Contemporary Dancers in Winnipeg, Canada.
Teaching is an integral part of her artistic life. Having practiced contortion since 2012, Anastasia draws on her training with Serchmaa Byamba and Samantha Halas, alongside ongoing workshops and her own movement research, to coach contortion and hand balancing. Her teaching is grounded in an understanding of anatomy and body mechanics, with progressive conditioning that develops the strength and control to support greater mobility. She places care, injury prevention, and longevity at the center of this demanding practice. Passing on knowledge and witnessing her students grow in confidence and ability is a lasting source of satisfaction.

The class goes beyond a general stretching session. You will work with exercises that develop the mobility, strength and coordination needed for particular hand-balancing and contortion skills.
Depending on your level and goals, your practice may include:
Freestanding handstands and changes of leg shape.
Handstand presses and elbowstands.
Bridges, cheststands and ankle catches.
Splits and needle scales.
Conditioning to support movement through a greater range.
These are possible directions for training, rather than a checklist everyone must complete. Anastasia adjusts the progressions so you can work at an appropriate level while developing the foundations for what comes next.
Anastasia’s teaching draws on anatomy, body mechanics and her own ongoing movement research. Strength and control are developed alongside flexibility, with attention to the demands of each position.
The aim is a practice you can approach with curiosity, patience and increasing confidence. Communicate discomfort, ask questions and take the time you need to understand a progression.
