About Jason
I began my scientific career as a teacher's assistant for my sophomore AP chemistry teacher and subsequently went to Montana State University and obtained a bachelor's degree in chemistry. When I took an advanced organic synthesis class as a senior, I instantly became hooked on organic chemistry and organic synthesis and saw in every problem set a beautiful structural chemical puzzle to be solved. I promptly went to work as an undergraduate researcher in my professor's lab and spent two years working on a diethyl zinc-mediated intramolecular cyclization of substituted pyrrolidine and thiazolidine compounds as building blocks for pharmaceuticals. I also began to work as a laboratory instructor for the university teaching general, analytical, and organic chemistry courses. After graduation I went to work at an analytical laboratory assessing the quality of water for anything from bacteria to cations, anions, heavy metals, and much more. During my time there I developed a method for the digestion of aqueous, organic, nitrogenous matter for the analysis of overall nitrogen content in a water sample. I continued to teach at the university and expanded my lesson plans, laboratory lectures, and implemented class-wide review sessions that sometimes garnered upwards of 150 students! I am passionate about chemistry and in particular teaching the subject in a way that is pragmatic and intentional. I hope that everyone can leave a discussion with me about chemistry feeling as though it is at least something interesting if not something to be marveled at.

I have only two goals for any lesson of mine. First and foremost we will achieve the level of success that you desire in your course. I will be there to work with you as much as you want to in order to succeed with confidence in all assignments, projects, and exams. I am not unused to 3-4 hour tutoring and review sessions (I actually love them)! My other goal is for you to see some of the relatability and fascinating intersections of chemistry to real everyday life and to appreciate that, while we may not need to remember the nitty-gritty of organic chemistry for the rest of our lives, we can appreciate why it impacts our lives and how it can be so fascinating.
My lessons have historically tended to be problem or question oriented, where a student has questions about specific examples of the material contained within a chapter. I find that this is usually because a student is typically able to digest most of the material but may need guidance in areas that become more nuanced as the material builds on itself. That being said, I have held many chapter and unit-based reviews for personal friends and colleagues as well as my own brother attending chemistry courses at university. I have copious lesson plans pertaining mostly to organic and general chemistry ready at hand if a student doesn't know where they would like to begin. My only request is that I can see a copy of expected learning objectives in a given course to ensure that I am covering all expected information to allow a student to succeed at their full potential.
I have also been a part of high-school outreach programs with MSU and am comfortable, capable, and prepared to cover materials at high-school level. In fact, my first chemistry teaching job was as a high-school senior tutoring students for my sophomore AP chemistry teacher!
I hope you all decide to come find the fun in chemistry with me! It really can be fun, I promise!

Perfect! Jason is very kind, patient, funny, and knowledgeable! I haven’t had a single question that he hasn’t been able to answer, he explains things very well and throughly. Would recommend him to anyone struggling with organic chemistry!
Perfect! As someone who has needed to repeat chemistry courses more than once, I can say with confidence that Jason has been a tremendous help. He has been able to help me figure out more about organic chemistry in our first few sessions than I was able to be solely listening to my professors the past times I took the course. The tidbits that Jason has given me so far, such as the few small pieces organic chemistry revolves around, have already given me a better understanding, and I no longer need to dedicate a whole afternoon or day to the weekly homework. It also helps that he doesn't just give the answers to me but will walk through a problem so that I can come to the solution on my own and actually understand how we got there.
Outside of the help Jason has given more the course I in, he has been quite flexible with finding time to meet. As a mom to an infant and full-time student, I'm very grateful for that because it's less stress on me if I need to move when we meet for one reason or another. It was also nice that I have the option to meet remotely or in-person depending on what kind of help I need. Overall, Jason has been a big help, and I look forward to the tutoring because I can ask any question about the material covered in the course and immediately be able to put my new knowledge into practice.Perfect! Super helpful and came prepared with examples! Great communication!
