About George
I currently study Aerospace & Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Leeds and I am going into my third year. I studied Maths and Further Maths (along with 2 other subjects) at A-Level and I achieved an A* in both. Also, because I am still a student I am constantly learning new things in maths, but I am also aware of the best methods and techniques to teach in order to be fully equipped for university. I believe that the best way to do well in maths is to fully understand what you are doing, as opposed to simply following a procedure (although this has its place under certain circumstances). By following this method, you can really minimise mistakes and achieve top grades.
I’ve always had an interest in how things work, and from a young age I have been interested in planes and in space. During my time in sixth form I managed to attain an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, which really helped to boost my interest in the subject. I think that my ultimate goal after my degree (MEng) and possibly a PhD would be to work for one of the companies at the forefront of space travel (spaceX, Virgin Galactic, Boeing etc), as this is a field which we really have not explored yet.

I have a large network of resources that I have access to and so will be able to prepare for most topics that a student needs to learn. I will usually start with an example question, whereby I explain the main principles of the given topic, followed by writing out a question and answering it myself so that the student gets an idea of how the question should be answered. I will then give the student a question to answer over a short interval (say 5 mins) and then ask the student to explain their answer and, if necessary I will correct the student, showing them where they made a mistake and the steps to achieving the correct solution. I will then proceed to show exceptional cases (if applicable) where the usual method may lead to an incorrect answer if care is not taken.
When I first meet a student, I will get them to write down some targets that they a) want to achieve & b) think are achievable. We will then check back to these targets each session to see if we are getting closer to them, and if we aren’t we look at why that might be. In this way I think students begin to self-evaluate which is key to improving. I feel the best way to encourage learning is to have an end goal. This goal may be to get into a top university, it may be to go up 2 grades, or even possibly just to understand a difficult part of the course. By breaking this goal down into manageable chunks and simply achieving a little at a time, the end result can be achieved far more easily.
