About Emily

Important Info: I like offer all my new students a free info session. During this session, I like to discuss with students and/or parents about how I go about teaching my students. During this time, I also like to help students set up a personal gmail so that they are able to create a google classroom. If the student is younger than 13, please have a parent present during this process. I will explain in more detail as to why I use google classroom during the info session.

Students are all different. One teaching method will work for some students, but won't work for all. I like to get to learn my students' learning method preferences and apply them during tutoring. I aim to create a safe and comfortable environment for my students. I want my students to feel confident in asking for additional help, asking to practice the material on their own, or ask me to look over their work and provide feedback. I make sure my students know that I am here to help them expand their understanding and knowledge on the subject(s) they need help with. I'm well aware that many parents hire tours on behalf of their child and would like to keep track of what their child is being taught during tutoring sessions but may not be available to sit-in during these session. My solution to this is to record all tutoring sessions with parent consent. These recordings will be emailed to and only the parent(s) or guardian(s). If this is something you (parent) might be interested in, please let me know. Additionally, I was once a child who struggled with advocating for myself in class due to my anxiety, and so I can sympathize with students who might not feel comfortable or safe asking for additional help during class or asking to go at a slower pace. I want to ensure all my students that our tutoring sessions are a safe area and I am here to match their needs.

More about me:

I'm a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. I'm extremely open-minded and very accepting. I was born and raised in the city of Chicago and attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, however, I plan on transferring to a college/university in Chicago. I enjoy teaching others but do not plan on becoming a teacher in the future so tutoring online is the perfect way for me to still be able to teach others while also pursuing my dream career path.

I love being able to help my students reach their fullest potential. I personally learn the best one-on-one and I know many others do to but it can be difficult to get the one-on-one help in school due to large classroom sizes. I enjoy being able to help individual students with their work and give them my undivided attention.

I've always enjoyed helping and teaching others, so when I was asked by my teachers in high school to tutor some of my struggling peers since I was already far ahead of the class, I was overjoyed and accepted. I spent over a year tutoring for my high school and come to love it. I had already been tutoring my younger brother before he entered high school and still tutor him.

Although I currently do not have a certificate or degree in education, I do have experience in tutoring. I often toturing my younger brother (high-schooler). I was provided with an opportunity by my school to tutor different levels of math/algebra while I was still in high school. This has greatly helped me improved how I work with others as well as helped me develop skills that allow me to adapt to other teaching methods. While tutoring many of my peers, I learned how each one of them learned and what works best for them and what doesn't.

When working with a new student, I like to focus on how they best learn. For example, do you learn best with lecture style,  visual/demonstrator, a mix of both, or other.

From there, we discuss what specifically they need help with. If they want help with new material/topic, need help with homework, need help studying for tests/exams, or anything else. During this time, I will ask students if they would like to have one tutor session or multiple sessions. This helps me determine if I need to prepare resources and lesson plans.

I am currently working a part-time job so I will do my best to provide all students with a calendar of my availability as soon as I finish planning out my week.

I tutored many students, each of whihc had different needs and teach style preferences. Some were visual learns, some prefer a lecture styled teaching method, others like to be thaught the material and then practice on their own, others liked to recieve feedback as they worked on their work, and so on. Some students need more guidance than others and some liked to work on their own. I always make sure I'm respecting my students' prefered learning/teaching method.

Don't be afraid to voice your needs or switch tutors. You need to find a tutor that is effective for you. Finding a tutor you feel comfortable with is also very important as it impact how well you're able to learn during these sessions. I also recommend having a liost on what you need help with.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. What are my needs?

2. Is there a specific teaching style I learn best with?

3. Do I want my tutor to provide extra practice outside tutoring? (worksheets, quizzes, tests, formula charts)

4. What is my schedule like and how often would I like to have tutoring sessions?

5. Do I have any important assignments, exams, tests, quizzes, or projects that I would like help with?

I come from a low-income family and I understand that being able to afford a tutor is a luxury for many. Thus, I want to be able to provide tutoring services at afforable prices. My rates are stated above and will remain the same for the moment. However, I'm more than happy to discuss and agree on a different price/rate. This will depend on how often you will be booking tutoring sessions and what will be taught/pratice during the sessions.
