About Jennifer
I received my Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science from the University of California Irvine, and I have also passed my California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) for Chemistry. Therefore, I have experience in both Life and Physical Sciences. Currently, I am enrolled in a program to complete my Single Subject Teaching Credential in Life Science, and I use my skills and techniques I have learned from the teaching credential program to uplift my own community through tutoring. Personally, I went into education because I enjoy the one-on-one connection a tutor/teacher gains with their students. This profession encourages students to be active, well-informed citizens who use their skills to make positive impacts on the world, whether it be from the direct skills from the subject they are tutored in or the critical thinking skills they develop. Knowledge empowers students, and I wish to cultivate a community of empowered citizens. I also have considerable experience tutoring and working with groups of students, regardless of my teaching credential program. This past school year, I have worked as a substitute teacher for Ontario Montclair School District (OMSD) (K-8), and I have worked at every grade and development level for the district, including students with Mild/Moderate and Moderate/Severe disabilities. Before I became a substitute teacher, I was an aide for Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P) at an elementary school. During my time there, I ran a TK-K Enrichment program, in which I designed educational and fun after-school activities, an after-school math support club for 3rd-6th graders, in which I designed games and practice activities for students struggling in math, and I ran an after-school tech club. In the tech club, students learned basic coding principles through Ozobots and basic circuits with various tech tubs in which fiber optic cables, switches, lights, and fans were used. My experience also extends to one-on-one tutoring. I tutored students from the elementary school level through high school, and I formed educational activities and games for students. I also kept track of their progress each day and communicated with their guardians. Working with these students opened my eyes to the struggles many students are going through that we may be unaware of as adults. This helped reaffirm my passion for working with students and helping them succeed, and lowering barriers that are put in front of them. As shown, I have considerable experience working with a broad spectrum of students across many age and ability levels. I also have a considerable love for teaching, which is why my career pathway has always involved education and working with students. My goal is to ensure the students in my community are given all the tools to succeed past childhood and into adulthood, where they can take what they have learned through tutoring and school and use it to make decisions that benefit them and society as a whole.

I have experience working with a diverse group of students, including elementary through high school, through previous positions as a one-on-one tutor for language arts and math and experience in the classroom. I have led after-school clubs in Ontario and Montclair, assisting students with language arts and math. In doing so, I have created and implemented educational activities and games for students. I am also in a teacher preparation course for middle and high school single-subject Science (Biology and Chemistry) and will be starting to student teach in the fall. Therefore, I will have experience with middle school and high school-level science curricula. I also have experience in behavior management at different ages and academic levels through my experience as a substitute teacher. My teaching method is based on Piaget, which is a developmental theory based on how children construct their understanding of the world through active exploration and interaction. Therefore, I try to include relevant examples and activities to help students grow in their understanding of the subject. Once students can connect their learning to applicable situations, students find it easier to use and retain the information. -Teaching Method: Inquiry Style-Approach -Encourage student to ask questions about problem and break down problems to what they know and what they do not know. -Scaffolded learning after exploration of the problem in which student and teacher work together to solve. -Practice Problems incorporated after guided practice - Adjust teaching/teach a new approach based on practice problem Day-to-Day Lesson breakdown: -Communicate with students on what they are learning/need assistance with. - Assist with immediate homework needs (see what is due and provide practice and assistance) -Next session: start first 10 minutes with review games/ activities that student can explore based on previous lesson -If immediate work is done, use time to explore supplemental practice (such as case studies or math games/activities), depending on the subject.
